Preferences

In the old Photo.net, it was possible to set preferences so that certain forums (fora) were not displayed. Is this possible in the current version? If so, how?

I looked at some length and cannot find a way to do it - I thought possibly there might be something under Watched Forums, but couldn't get anything useful to happen. Hopefully you'll get a definitive answer.

I have discovered that if you select a forum and mark it "read" it will not delete the forum, but it makes its symbol gray so at least you're less likely to mindlessly click on it.

 

The "read" gray image is used for all the fora I had marked no-show in the old Photo.net 1.0, BTW

I suspect there are myriad ways to "grey" out the thread icon, but it would be easier for me if it weren't there, so I wouldn't accidentally post to a forum watched by the orthodox.

Not sure if this is the specific incident JDM is thinking, but recently JDM made a mistake and posted something to the abstract forum accidentally, not realizing he was posting to the abstract forum. He was asked by the OP what he considered abstract about his photot, and responded by saying he had mistakenly posted to that forum, thinking it was just a regular No Words forum. Certainly, a reasonable mistake. Now it has somehow turned into a forum watched by the orthodox. I don't get that transformation of the issue from one's own innocent mistake into another's orthodox insistence. Regardless of the rationale, though, the feature JDM is requesting does seem like a good idea. Knowing Michael for years on PN, I didn't think he was being "orthodox" in questioning it. He was being inquisitive. And even if a little more than inquisitive, it's not necessarily a matter of orthodoxy to think that abstracts are best suited to the abstract forum. Some would think it common sense.

Actually, the events that sparked my efforts were not concerning the Abstract Forum (I confess being chastised there is not my issue), although the insistence on correctness of self-appointed hall monitors is a factor, no matter what forum.

 

Over the years, this quest for "purity" has been an issue on even so free a forum as Classic Manual Cameras. It breaks out occasionally nearly everywhere, but on the "good" forums, it is usually discouraged or ignored.

 

Sometimes, of course, the hall monitors do get it right.

I've encountered this, too, though not as much in the forums I frequent. I can imagine if you encounter it a lot, you'd just want to avoid it altogether. Given my less frequent encountering of it, I just ignore it not through software but just on my own. I read it and take it for what it is and then go ahead and do what I like. The only hall monitors who actually matter are those who have the power to edit or delete. In terms of appropriateness of photos in certain themed forums like abstract, I fall somewhere in the middle. I don't think it would be a good idea to allow it to become completely random and lose the flavor of abstractness which is its purpose but I want it to be flexible enough to accommodate even loose interpretations of that theme, which would include representational photos that have strong elements of abstraction. I've only noticed challenges in that forum when it's very difficult to see why a photo was posted there, and most often it turns out to have been posted there in error, after-the-fact rationalizations notwithstanding. In the thread I'm thinking of, the discussion actually led Michael to post a second version of his original photo which was both better all around, in my eyes, and a better abstract so I think, at least for Michael and hopefully others following the thread, the discussion about appropriateness to the forum wound up being quite productive. I don't doubt that, more often than not, the orthodoxy police instigations don't lead to such constructive results.
