W/NW Pic-O'-The-Week #50

Recommended Posts

So, my contribution, from a christmas function yesterday. Taken with M type 246 and my jupiter 85mm lens (I did the santa photos with an old nikon).

I hope this works - we have been having all sorts of problems with our internet her and the rollout of what is euphemistically called our National Broadband Network here in Oz. Again my apologies - the files are too large. I will work on this.

Regards, Arthur

The J-9 I had several years ago (like other lenses copied or derived from those by Zeiss) did not focus correctly on a Leica. I adjusted the range-finder of a FED 2 body such that the J-9 gave spot on focus on it at my usual distance for portraits ("head shots") with 85 mm. It gave relatively low contrast but was sharp enough. I understand that it works well on Kiev bodies.

It's an interesting shot, Moving On. I like the exposure control, and control of contrast you've got here. An iconic camera. You are blessed. Very little is critically sharp. What was the lens? And it's settings?. And the scanning path?. Keep posting.

Billblackwellphotography - excellent shots. I'd give my eye teeth to have your consistent control of exposure, clarity, contrast. I think I've said that before. Your seaside shot takes it away. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your comment mukul_dube. Yes, I think I should have post processed the shots. While I like the sonnar designs, and at times the J9 delivers, it's never at open aperture, unless you purposefully want that 'smudgeyness'. I used an EVF - I find I've got to bypass the rangefinder with russian copies, and even then, well, just pray, and the rains may, or may not, come.

Rick_van_Nooij. Just saw your shots. They are exceptional photography. Will look forward to more. You balance shadow and light well. Any 'tricks' there? I have a IIIc, which I rarely use. I remember the limitations of using it. These are great shots.

Sergio_ortega|7, where was this taken? It's good.

I've enjoyed this week's photos. For my own part, I will do some research about sizing images. But any help appreciated. My files all look to me below 400k, but they won't post. Any help appreciated (it would have to be 'speak to me as you speak to a child').

I think the IIIc shot mainly worked out because I fupped the developing time on the IIIc; developing it in HC-110 for 6 minutes instead of the given 5 for dillution B.

The film was exposed as ISO200, exposure was based on a reading of my Voigtländer-Cosina VCII meter.

The Epson R-D1 shot, I recall I exposed with the shutter on Aperture Priority and played with the curves in Photoshop to bring out the detail in the darkened areas.

I miss the Epson a bit, I lent it to a friend for an undetermined time, ergonomically it's just perfect for a digital M camera. Looks like the new iteration of the Leica M10 shares a lot of its features.

That's from Havana, about twenty years ago. El Capitolio in Cuba was a copy of the one in Washington. The large street area in front of the building is a gathering place for private taxis and transports. I'd bet most of those old cars are still running today.

Arthur, thanks. I was just happy to get a relatively clean frame from the bathroom sink. No post, simply scanned with Silverfast as is and I haven’t even begun to tweak the software. The Black and White, Rangefinders, and home developing is all new to me. The lens is better than my focusing and hold. Nikkor S 50 f1.4. The split image rangefinder thing is taking a bit of getting used to.

I’m testing a few old cameras to be sure there are no issues right now and plan to dedicate more time to a single camera shortly.

If its aligned, I think if you stick with it a little, you might find it anxiety producing until you get to trust it. The split image finder, when you get used to it, can be very accurate when you correlate how the finder image looks when aligned and the pic is in good focus. That lens is very sharp. You'll get it down. Are you having fun developing yet? I was wondering how you were going about it. Using a changing bag? Your image is not too bad if that's right off the scanner with no sharpening or anything and I like the way you framed the whole thing FWIW.
