I updated firmware on Sigma 150-600mm C to version 2.0 problem

I updated to the latest firmware v 2.0 on the SIGMA 150-600mm Contemporary, the lens works great directly mounted to my Canon 5D MK IV. The trouble is the lens no longer focuses using the SIGMA APO 2 x Tele Converter EX DG at any F-Stop or focal distance and it used to work fine before the firmware update. The camera would back off on the number of focal points available prior to the update, but now all the focal points show up, but the camera just won't focus.

It does matter what mode I put the lens in, custom 1, custom 2 or stock mode and what distance I focus at.

The 2x Tele Converter works fine with a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens ironically, just the Sigma lens is not playing nice with the SIGMA Tele Converter. As I said, it worked great with the Canon 5D MK IV before.

Now interesting is the SIGMA 150-600mm Contemporary will focus with the 5D MK IV and 2x Tele Converter in Live View mode touching the screen, it instantly locks focus and takes the picture. So the issue seems to be using the viewfinder focal points and the 2x tele converter.

The lens does work fine without the 2x teleconverter. And when I find where I but the SIGMA 1.4 x Tele converter I will post an update on test results.

The 5D MK IV is running Canon Firmware v1.0.4 - I recently updated the 5D MK IV firmware also and I am not 100% certain I tested the lens with the Tele converter after the 5D MK IV firmware update either, I may have, but I am 100% certain this lens has worked on this camera with that very 2 x Tele Converter. But I would think SIGMA should look into compatibility if there is and issue with the 5D MK IV using the latest camera firmware and their 2x Tele converter

I sent an email to Sigma. Have not heard anything yet. Will keep everyone posted.

In the mean time I am running this by the PN collective, any thoughts?

Just tested it with the SIGMA 1.4x EX DG Tele converter, seems any focus point focusing above F/8 has been thoroughly shut down. Very disappointed. I know this always worked great before, I was using this combo a couple weeks ago. Not a good moment for team SIGMA. I sure hope they fix the firmware and not expect me to go buy their latest Tele Converters when the old ones worked fine. Kind of feels like paying SIGMA for a Dock so they can give me firmware to cripple my rig so I can spend more money. Hope they are not really doing that. Edited by Mark Keefer

I have have an update, I took the Canon 5D MK IV out with the SIGMA 1.4x EX DG Tele converter and the SIGMA 150-600mm Contemporary and under daylight conditions I was indeed able to achieve focus point lock at F/9, I assume it just needed better light than I had yesterday where I was not able get any lock above F/8.

Sadly the 2x Tele Converter still doesn't seem to work even under sunshine conditions unless I go into Live View mode.

At least that is a little good news. lol. I am still debating on reverting the Camera Firmware back. Hoping SIGMA gets back to me.

Next thought is anybody have any suggestions on making the manual focus ring adjust easier and smoother so it is not so tight and jerky to adjust. WD-40 lol?

I am also curious if I would have better luck with the new Canon 2.0 Tele converter?

Possibly the new firmware allows the f stop of the lens + extender combination to be correctly reported to the body. If I'm not mistaken, viewfinder AF is supposed to work with f/8, but not with lenses that have smaller maximum apertures than that. f/6.3 x 2 = f/12.6 which is a much smaller aperture than f/8. What you could do is try live view AF, or something like the EOS R.

Live View does work.

why did you update; just because you can?... or it wasnt working properly with the older version software?

btw does everything work in manual mode?

the saying i live by..... if it doesnt itch, dont scratch.

too bad hardware these days is so dependant on software.

The more you say, the less people listen.

Updated for faster focusing, and when using the straight lens on the camera, it is fast.

It works OK with the 1.4x --- so on those occasions when I use the 2x I will just go into live view or manual. Pretty much won't be using the 2x for birds in flight unless on a tripod in Live View mode.

True, just the nature of the beast of added tech perhaps. I wonder how much is physical hardware limitations and how much is deliberately baked in limitations.
