Some Questions About How Site Works

I am a new member, just joined and I'd like to understand how things work here. I just perused "street photography" and see that when one makes a post with their image ie. a post entitled "Silhouettes"was followed by many posts of images by others of the topic but without commentary. So are you not to expect commentary on your posted image but rather the addition of images by others who believe their images fit the theme?

Generally, only the No Words Forum doesn't allow words other than location or camera / lens. Several other Forums have rules about how many photos, size of photos, etc. The easiest way to familiarize yourself is to click on Forums, then the ones you are interested in, and read the rules, if there are any. Nice of you to ask! Welcome aboard.

Peter, in a lot of threads in the street forum, you'll see what you encountered, one photo following the next on a theme. Sometimes, though, someone will start a thread with a photo and some commentary. If you'd like to start a thread and hope to have some dialogue, I suggest starting with the thoughts you have in mind and, if you so choose, include after your comments a photo that might be illustrative. Generally speaking, the forums are not a place where you'd seek critique on a particular photo, which is done in the gallery side of the site, but the forums can certainly be a place to discuss photos or themes. As you look further into the Street forum, you'll find there are some good discussions on various "street" or "documentary" topics. Recent ones that I recall included discussions of the photos of the Japanese Internment camps as well as one discussion on someone's current fears about shooting in the street. Welcome and good luck.

So, next to your avatar at the top of this page are 3 stupid and unexplained icons. The one on the left has mountains and a sun, maybe a moon if it’s nighttime. If you click on that you’ll see a link to critiques. That will bring you to galleries categorized by genre, where you can browse people’s photos and comment on them I haven’t done much of this, and I doubt it’s very intuitive and also probably not very active, but there you have it.
