Dear all,

I have Lightroom V5 and want to upgrade, at least to V6 in standalone terms, or whatever the most recent version is. Is it possible to still upgrade to V6 etc please and if so how? I appreciate there has been a fair amount of discussion about this in the past but it is not clear what the current situation is.

I am trying to avoid the creative cloud thing so may as well try and get as up to date as possible for the time being. Longterm I may have to go to something else or sell my soul to Adobe. I have used Photoshop Elements in the past but can probably live without it if need be.

Thanks,

Andrew

I just looked over at Adorama where you can buy 'Light Room 6 Software' for $164.99 or you can buy for example a Canon 6D with Lightroom 6 for $999 or a Sony A7R II for $1998 with a copy of Lightroom 6 thrown in. Pretty sure BH and others will be competitive. Good luck, I'm staying with very. 5 for now since Lightroom hasn't been all that useful for me with my skill and knowledge lever in using it.

You want to make sure LR 6 handles RAW for your camera or any update you're considering before purchasing. I don;t believe newer cameras' RAW are handled by LR6.

Sure it does, after you convert to DNG with the FREE standalone converter. New version just released yesterday now supports:

  • Apple

    • Apple iPhone XS
    • Apple iPhone XS Max
    • Apple iPhone XR

[*]Canon

  •
  • Canon PowerShot SX70 HS

[*]Google

  •
  • Google Pixel 3
  • Google Pixel 3 XL

[*]Huawei

  •
  • Huawei P9 Lite

[*]Leica

  •
  • Leica M10-D
  • Leica M10-P

[*]LG

  •
  • LG G7 ThinQ (back camera only)

[*]Nikon

  •
  • Nikon COOLPIX P1000
  • Nikon D3500
  • Nikon Z 6

[*]Samsung

  •
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9
  • Samsung Galaxy S6
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

[*]Sony

  •
  • Sony DSC-HX95

Using the DNG convertor is a good option although I've never used it. But some people may not want the additional step. Fortunately my latest cameras are covered by the latest purchased LR6 version.

Curious about the convertor. Can you do a mass conversion when you import from the camera? When importing to LR, how do you "Convert" so the photos are stored in the particular way you want LR to do that? Does IMPORT from a stored location in your computer allow the storage to change to match your LR preferences?

Solves the 'issue' you report about any version of LR and ACR. Maybe you should consider/try it....

But some people may not want the additional step.

Some people don't want to subscribe and/or upgrade to software. This is a FREE fix for that issue. Not every company provides such a free option (consider Capture 1 as one example; get a new camera, you must update the software for a fee).

NO, the latest cameras as not supported in LR6 as evidence of the new(er) versions of the DNG converter. The current version of Lightroom is 8.X. Maybe yours is, others, not so much.

Yes, you can mass (batch) convert using the DNG converter. Then you simply import in LR as usual.

Fortunately my cameras are supported by LR6. If and when I buy a new camera, I'll have to consider all options. It's nice to know that DNG process will be available.
