Film Camera Week for November 9

Recommended Posts

A few with the Pentacon 6 on Pancro 400. My first 120 developed in PMK as per Film Box recommendation for 24 deg F. Very disappointing. Prefer HP5. Scanned BSH/V700.

Two with the CZJ Biometer 80/2.8.

Excellent images for all that, Tony. I eventually gave up on the Pancro 400; while it has a very good tonal range it seems to have a slightly obtrusive grain and just lacks the sparkle of HP5 Plus.

I recently picked up a Nikkor AF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6D lens at a local market for the princely sum of $15, which was about right since the AF was no longer functioning. Still, I'd been observing that this chunk of plastic has something of a cult following, and I thought I'd try it on a FE manual focus body. Despite being one of the most insubstantial little zoom lenses I've ever handled, it actually performs very well indeed, to the extent that I've ordered a working copy for the Nikon AF bodies. I'll post some samples, and I'd be interested to hear any other opinions of or experiences with this lens.

The film was Ilford FP4 Plus developed in PMK Pyro, scanned on an Epson V700 Photo using Silverfast SE software.

Nikon has often made zooms that were light and seemingly cheaply made but the lenses were optically of very high quality. Your copy certainly has delivered high quality images. I remember many years back one of the photo magazines tested the Nikon kit lens 35-80 f 3.5-5.6 and found it to be a surprisingly good performer. An inexpensive performer that I like is the Sigma HF 28-80 f 3.5-5.6. I have one in Pentax AF and Maxxum and like the images.

I've been playing with my Zeiss Maximar 207/7 and trying x-ray film (it's hard to get much 9x12 film here in the US and this stuff is really cheap!). I haven't completely settled on an ISO for it yet, nor on the best developer. Tried D-76, RO9, and a couple flavors of Caffenol. These are Caffenol C-H(rs) 12 min.

@jpalmer57 you wouldn't know it's cheap film from the photos. Really nice tonal qualities.

Thanks, I've just started playing with it. In some ways it's a pain. Most x-ray films have emulsion on both sides so it's very easy scratch at least one side. It doesn't come in most normal sizes so I cut it down from 5x12 inches. And the back side emulsion give's a little "glowy" look and can make it look less sharp. But so far it's been fun. And that's the point, isn't it?
