Lens problem

Hello everyone!

I have a zuiko 28mm lens which seems to have a problem. When I stop down from F8 to F11 (and further to F16 and F22) the view through the viewfinder gets darker and I notice that my camera meter reading drops about 2 occasionally 3 stops each time rather than just one stop. At the same time I can see that my Depth of field preview button is very slack, it almost has no 'stick' to it. If I push it several times very rapidly it will eventually go back out again and the viewfinder goes more normal and the meter reading is accurate. This is not a constant problem but is happening about 50% of the time.

I am using an Olympus OM2n and as I understand it it has 2 meters and so my question is - will this problem actually affect my exposure or is it a minor problem which can largely be ignored?

Thanks in advance!

Steve, it sounds as if something is sticking badly in the lens. The camera always meters with the lens aperture fully open. The aperture should normally be fully open with the aperture blades not visible. It should only close down to the taking aperture, say F/8, when you operate the shutter, or press the depth of field preview, when you will see the blades closing down.

Try removing the lens and set it to F/22, then looking through it, press the DOF button, or move the lever at the rear of the lens which stops it down. You should see the blades opening and closing snappily. If you see any delay or sluggishness the lens needs opening up and the aperture mechanism cleaning or repairing.

Thank you! It is indeed very, very slow. I will take it to get cleaned
