Mary Doo
Basic Guidelines "In the strictest sense, nature photography should not include "hand of man elements". Please refrain from images with buildings or human made structures like roads, fences, walls. Pets are not permitted. Captive subjects in zoos, arboretums, or aquariums are permitted, but must be declared, and must focus on the subject, not the captivity. Images with obvious human made elements will likely be deleted from the thread, with an explanation to the photographer. Guidelines are based on PSA rules governing Nature photography which also cover the Nature Forum. Keep your image at/under 1000 pixels on the long axis for in-line viewing. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site at Flicker, Photobucket, your own site, etc. Each member please post no more than just one image to this weekly thread per week." funkag
Wide open, my 1960ish Nikkor-S 5.8cm f1.4 is something that needs to be used sparingly - this Greater Fringed Gentian made for a good subject, I think:

Rod Sorensen
Was waiting to see a "hand of man" criticism for Mike's Royal Tern. Have always thought that banding shouldn't detract from the wildness of a bird, but figured it would somehow exclude it from being seen as a "nature" image. I live near the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, the summer home for a decent number of Whooping Cranes. All my Whooper images are of banded birds, because virtually every Whooper in the US is banded. I've avoided posting any of those images, but might give it a shot now. :-) Thanks, Mike. Look forward to your banded nature images. :) See: Definition of Nature | Photographic Society of America (link).

Rod Sorensen
Mary, Thanks for the link. Probably should have looked it up myself instead of assuming something. I am wondering if that should be explicitly stated in the MiN guidelines for those of us that didn't know that.
