rob_ruttan
Hello, Epson 4490 scanners are available for very low prices, and apparently can handle 4x5 negatives. 'm considering a move in that direction. Apparently Windows 10 drivers can be gotten for them and there are adapters for the input jacks. However, they are a little out of date; how do people with experience feel about the quality of these scanners compared to much more expensive models like the V800? Thanks, Rob
JDMvW
Flatbed scanners handle 4x5 prints or negatives from decently to very well. However, the 4490 is pretty old technology, and I'd look for something newer if I were you. Although I have film scanners, for large negatives I often use my old Canon 9000F and find it works just fine. Here is a reduced-size scan of a 4x5" Polaroid Type 52 image, done on a Canon 9050.. custom film holders for fl
>>Epson 4490 scanners are available for very low prices, and apparently can handle 4x5 negatives.<< For 4x5 you want a 4990, not a 4490. If you get a 4990 in good working condition and open it up to clean the built up outgassing fog, it often will perform very close to a V7xx/V8xx. Scanner technology just hasn't progressed that much since the 4990. Doug
