jdebever
Anyone know how to get windows exporer to display the 5d4 cr2's? Googling doesn't give me any answer.
Jochen_S
Wait for Microsoft to hopefully someday update their camera codec pack or beg Canon to do the work for them. Link to a recent MS support forum thread
Glenn McCreery
Why not use the Canon Digital Photo Professional software that came with your camera? DPP displays CR2 files as thumbnails or full screen images, which it can then export as tiff or jpeg files, or open in Photoshop. I use Photoshop CS5, which does not recognize RAW files from from my 5D4, but by opening the images in DPP, I can then directly transfer the images to Photoshop from DPP as tiff files for further editing. I use a Mac computer, so there may be some problems with Windows Explorer that I am unaware of. Mark Keefer
I have not found a way but don't really care as I use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic CC when doing anything with RAW. Occasionally I may use Digital Photo Professional, but Lightroom is my go to post editing software. I use Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 on different computers. The work flow is the same. My work flow is plug the Camera into the computer via the USB 3 cableturn on the camera, the EOS Utility 3 runsClick on Download Images. When all images have downloaded I unplug the camera.Start Lightroom CC, import images, Source Other, find the folder of images just downloaded. At this point (while in the search for folder window) I may rename the folder keeping the date, but maybe adding where the photos were taken, this helps months later.Select the folder and import. In Lightroom CC I go to the Develop Tab and start post editingfrom in Lightroom I can choose to send a photo to Photoshop for heavier editing if needed, in Photoshop if I hit save it sends the edited file back to Lightroom and it will show up as an xxxxxx-Edit.tif file next to the original CR2 image. From Lightroom I then Export sending the edited photo as a JPG to the finished images folder I named after the shoot with the date. When I want to look at my images through Windows I just look at the finished edited folder and don't have to sort through images that did not make the cut. Another option if you refuse to use Lightroom or DPP is to shoot in both RAW and JPEG, and while you can not see the RAW thumbnail, you can see the JPG thumbnail right next to the .CR2 and know the RAW (.CR2) is that image. And eventually windows may have a Codec. Edited September 20, 2018 by Mark Keefer Cheers, Mark
jdebever
i just installed the 15 day free trial version of FastPictureViewer Codec Pack. Works. Windows is displaying the cr2 files again. Now the cr2 and jpg look exactely the same. Witht the old codec i was using with the 5d2 there was a slight difference between the display of jpg and cr2 files. Now they look the same. I shoot raw + jpg. Do the first 4 steps of Mark;s workflow. For small projects (like the flowers from the garden) i leave the cr2 and jpg in the same folder. For the bigger projects i create subfolders. cr2, yes, no. (cr2 keep reject.) I move the cr2 files to the cr2 folder (dosbox move *.cr2 cr2) then i open the exporer, reduce the window size so it displays 1 vertical row of files. (move that to the right of my display) then open the first foto in wndows picture viewer. scale it so it occupies the left of the screen. In thew right window, then drag and drop the photo to the yes or no folder that are displyed just above it.. picute viewer will automaticall display the next photo. Here's an example of how it looks. (note this is one step further) works for me, and is very fast. From the yes/keep folder i then select the 10 photos to put on the site, or 3 for the thursday photo.. (selection folder) then i decide what files i keep as in camera jpg or if they need some photoshop (elements) or lightroom (old version) For the ones that need some work i go to the cr2's and go from there. Most i do is straighten horizon, and remove debis from the photo. And a bit of exposure and color tweaking. Still do not like the subscription model of cc. For the bigger projects i also add a discription to the date folder name.. (helps finding the important stuff.)
Trigger_Happy
I'm a LR addict myself. But I hardly ever attach the camera to the computer. I have a card reader which I use and I import the images to LR directly. LR copies them to the raided disk cabinet and there's also a cloud back-up feature attached to that. I only wish I would be better at keywording. This was perhaps (;)) a bit OT. My apologies to the OP.
Mark Keefer
i just installed the 15 day free trial version of FastPictureViewer Codec Pack. Works. It is a shame we have to buy a third party fix (as reasonably priced as it is) to something basic that should be supplied by the camera manufacturer. Yes, i realy think Canon is dropping the ball here. They should supply a codec fror this. And to go even further OT. I also have 4T raided synology Nas, but copy myself.. only keep about 1 year of photos on the pc. the 4T is now 2T photos and 2T music, but the music collection is growing even faster than the photos. So soon i will add another 4T for music, and the old one is for photos only. I backup to usb drive, that i keep off site. Don't like the cloud stuff. But thats a bit of the security IT consultant in me. I just do not want any of my files to reside on a server thats in another country, that thinks it has the right to roam through it. ANd the secure ones are too expensive.
Trigger_Happy
I work off my RAID's directly even though they are NAS. I couldn't tell you the specs since I'm married to the IT-guy. I also work quite a bit in premiere pro and having the video clips on the NAS works as well. I don't have any raw-copies on my harddrive.
