Minolta XD-11 won't focus at infinity.

Hi Everyone,

I recently picked up an XD-11 that is in very good shape however I can't get it to focus at infinity. It seems I need to turn the focus ring just a little bit more to get the prism aligned but can't. I have tested the lens with another camera and the lens does'nt seem to be the problem. I have read something about "mirror angles" being out of adjustment? Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix or what it takes to fix it.

Thanks!

Richard

Hi,

I own 2 XD11's and love them but have never heard of this problem with that body. I have encountered it with two of my MF bodies.

First off...by any chance did someone leave an eyepiece correction lens attached to your body? They are small rectangular frames that pop into the eyepiece. That would definitely throw your focus off. I assume that you've tried more than one lens and have ruled the lens out. I have to look at my camera before I say more. If it is the mirror position it is too far down rather than up. With the shutter held in the bulb position examine your mirror stop and see if you have a missing bumper or if it is damaged (if I had my camera infront of me I'd be more specific). If it is not something simple like a bumper your going to send it out. More than likely the mirror box will have to be removed for the repair, your looking at a costly repair probably more than the camera is worth (unless it's a pristine black body).

best of luck

Rick

Thanks for the reply Rick. I actually got it figured out. I had to adjust the set screw under the mirror. Just a slight turn and I was able to get it to focus properly.

Hi Richard,

I'm glad you fixed it. I learned something, I never knew about the set screw. It sounds like a good design to me. Before switching to digital that was one of my favorite bodies and IMO the best Minolta ever made.

regards,

Rick

Hi Richard

It seems that I have the same problem with my XD7 (european XD11 name), I can't get it to focus at infinity (and focus is always like 10% distance behind focused subject on developed photos). Could you explain me where exactly to find the set screw to adjust the mirror ? I looked into the Minolta XD-11 Repair Manual but can't find any information about mirror adjustement and this set screw !

I own a second XD7 that works perfectly so I know that the focus shift problem doesn't comes from the lens.

Thanks !

Jonathan
