donald_miller5
I smokeNow here is an interesting question. I essentially stopped smoking in 1997. But I will enjoy a very rare occasional ( a pack will last me 6 months with me throwing out a half pack in about 6 months). But I still have a knack of blowing big beautiful rings in groupings of 3 or 4. I thought it would be nice to photo them. None of come out as if they are transparent. How would I photo them? Is it lighting, BW,Film to use and settings, film or digital? I only have a few seconds before they dissolve.? Anyone have smokeadvice?) Sandy Vongries
I'll see if I can find one - have done it with my DF 24-85 or 24-120 - cigar smoke ( from my occasional cigar) at the dining table after dinner - that has a strong light low angle from the West. As to settings, if I find one, it'll be in the exif.
Ed_Ingold
Oblique light against a dark background should work well - illumination by scattering. Your non-smoking health insurance is safe if you make a smoke ring machine (aka, vortex generator). That's a 2# coffee can with a nickel sized hole in the bottom. Fill it with smoke, and tap the plastic lid lightly. A stronger thump will blow out a candle 10 feet away.
Hector Javkin
Here is a nicely detailed answer: How To Photograph Smoke I particularly liked the reminder to avoid having any ventilation in the room.

paul ron
smoke is difficult to photograph n control. from some experimenting i found back lighting against a dark background works best. also controling air current to get your desired effect.... 3 The more you say, the less people listen. ng1664886091
Smoke and water drops are the only things I use flash for )) Also black background and no air movement (ie working air conditioner ) work very well.

ng1664886091
Forgot to mention that for adding color it is very convenient to use colored gels for flashes.
