Film Camera Week for July 20

Recommended Posts

This week I took the Pentax MZ-5n for a walk, with the Pentax-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited. Film is out-of-date Fuji Superia 400.

Am waiting for a purchased replacement Minolta MD Rokkor 35-70 f3.5 from Japan. Unfortunately, I now read that this model is inferior to the later non-Rokkor.

Tony, as I understand it, there were three versions of the Minolta 35-70 f/3.5. The first, which Leica adopted as the Vario-Elmar-R 35-70mm f/3.5, had the "Rokkor" designation. The second version dropped the name Rokkor from the nameplate, made cosmetic changes to the zoom mechanism and made slight optical changes. The third version was optically the same as the second version but added a macro function. From all accounts, versions two and three are considered to be optically superior to version one, but it takes pretty much bench testing procedures to find the difference. I've used versions one and three and found no noticeable difference in their performances.

I bit the bullet and send my 150mm Zenzanon MC f/3.5 away for a CLA. These lenses for the Bronica ETR system with their inbuilt leaf shutters are both excellent optically and superbly built, but fiendishly complicated within, so it was not a cheap exercise. Still, I fitted the lens to an ETRs body and and it seems to be as good as new. I'll post some samples from a roll of Ilford HP5 Plus developed in PMK Pyro, and I have a roll of the wretched Arista 200 half-finished so I may post a few more later in the weekend.

Having a translator app on your smart phone is very beneficial .

I love the detail in this one. Did you see any falling rocks? I've seen lots of falling rock warning signs, but I've yet to see a rock fall in any of those places.

Race cars at speed is a challenge with a YashicaMat 124. . .you hope your panning (thru the depressed sports finder) is "on". . .a bit like craps. . . sometimes you WIN ! UFX 100, OA & V800 scan. Data: 1/125 @ f8. The big 6x6 neg helps for cropping. @ f8.

For me, that would be more like winning the lottery! You totally nailed that one.

Worth every penny! Every shot is stunning in one or more ways.

I've had the 400 since the late 70's. After reading a back issue of Pop Photo (or Modern) about the low cost 400 teles I thought it'd be nice to have one. My dad ordered a couple through Kalt (with which we had a dealership). He sold one and I got the other one. Even today it's still a fun lens to use.

Thanks for the comment Dave. I "generally" use the MF for static detail work. f 32-45 can be had with most of my MF, but that requires the tripod. Why I did the Lotus shot, ?? Only one other of the 12 was acceptable, but it was a bit mushy. Bill

The 400/6.3 lens was to me, ideal for race car action while in Europe. The last two years of my Army stint was with an aviation detachment outside of Nuremburg. Being the "unofficial" photog for the unit, I grumbled to my CO (Major) about not having a tele lens. He shows me the unit "slush" fund & says get one ! Spiratone it was. This bit was repeated a month or two later for one of their CAD tele's. . .Pity I had to give each back to The Uncle when I discharged in 67. Bill

Never had a problem with image quality with my 400, but when tripod mounted the mirror vibration could blur the image for shutter speeds below 1/125 second. I could put my hand near the end of the barrel to help dampen the vibrations. Often I used a bean bag, but for the shots I posted I sat in the vehicle and propped the lens on the partially rolled down window.

Of course, using the lens with a camera that has mirror lockup took care of the problem.

Love the shots with the Tamron. The 400 seems like a pretty good performer, too.

Stormy weather means I'm unable to finish a roll of Arista 200 in the Bronica ETRs, but here are a few more from the session with the 150mm Zenzanon MC f/3.5 lens. The film was Ilford HP5 Plus developed in PMK Pyro.

Amazing images. I thing Nightmare is a surprisingly appropriate name for that shot. Still looking for the unicorn, but I love the shot even without it.

Thanks, Dave. For some quirky reason the shadow in the pic reminded me of a horse, with a tap on it's head, or something...I think I'm spending too much time at this computer...
