Transparency isn’t the only issue. Have you considered the fact the Martin may be in need of assistance at the moment.?

Yes. And if that's the case, I'll totally understand, but we have no reason to believe that is the case.

We can only "consider" what we see...and what we see is a deleted thread of considerable value with no explanation despite another broken promise from Glenn that the explanation would be coming.

If there is something else going on, frankly I don't know how I'd have any way to know. If there is something else going on, I most certainly would change my tune but there's been nothing to indicate that. What I do know is you have a bunch folks in Classic Cameras who feel like their attempts to help answer questions are in vain because those could disappear at any time.

Aside from that, if indeed Martin is having issues that precipitated this, he need to step away from being a moderator until he gets things in his personal life straightened out and can moderate objectively again.

IMO this is an "airing laundry in public" situation that does not benefit the site in re: guests. Don't know about you, but I haven't found a place I like enough to leave PN, warts, wrinkles and all. There is no undoing, and explanation after the fact doesn't heal a lot of wounds.

Regardless of the specific instance and content, I think it would be good practice for Glenn to follow through on his promises to membership in a timely fashion. If Glenn, for whatever reason, determines his promise to get to the bottom of this situation and let us know about it needs to be withdrawn or modified or can’t or shouldn’t be fulfilled, he should let membership know that in a timely fashion.
We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!

He could just be a jerk without any extenuating circumstances.

dave, u r all heart

actually dave’s comment shows just how much moderating has slipped of late. not only have several posts gone against community guidelines (no comments on moderation) but suggesting a moderator could be a jerk would have incurred a ban years ago.

The point here isn't the specific person, and in that sense, Norman has been completely right that this shouldn't become a witch hunt. Assuming the worst about a person you never met (only some forum posts) isn't helping anything or anyone, it only helps degradation. If we want situations like this solved and avoided for the future, we should look at the causes, and avoid making it a name-and-shame-game.

The point here (in my view) is that it should be transparent when moderators interfere in a thread, and remove posts (be it partial, be it completely), and notify members why they've done so, and why. Hearing that in its current state, the moderators lack tools and a discussion platform of their own for this, is certainly what helps worsen the issue. So I guess the immediate actions for site management should be clear: keep your moderators on board, think how you can continue to motivate, and make very sure proper and good tools are in place. Once that is there, good clear transparent communications to the members should avoid further issues like what has happened here.

What does heart have to do with it? It's a simple fact. I don't know the guy. He could be a saint or he could be a jerk. Each is equally likely, and I have not called him either one.

And if this place was still as draconian as you suggest it used to be, I would have nothing to do with it. I'd say the change is more in the nature of growing up emotionally, rather than slipping. There has to be some mechanism to allow users to provide feedback to the site operators.
