How can I delete my account?

I am really annoyed. I used the site for many years, learned much, had many really good conversations. But during the last maybe two years I lost interesst in photography. Still have my camera with me in holidays and on one or the other occasion, but I don't follow discussions anymore. So I thought it was a wise thing for me to delete my account. But I did not find any button to do so. When I choos "contact" from the menu at the bottom of the page, the page is black. From an old thread I found the email adress contact@photo.net, posted my wish there and did not get any reply. Why is not possible to delete my account myself? Please admin, help me.

The site is archived; and, since your posts are not "alone" in a thread, they are permanently part of the record.

Something to that effect used to be in the signup texts.

What you can do is to change your name on the site and then go away and not come back.

Thanks for your input. This will be probably the only way to leave. Still disappointing that I didn't get a reply from the moderators or runners of this site. On oher sites you can simply delete your account and your comments stay in the thread but are not conected to your name anymore. So this should be possible on photo.net as well but is not wanted. You can check out any time you like but you can never leave, as the Eagles put it.

Still more aggrevating! I changed my avatar yesterday, came back today just to find my old photo. Changed the "screen name" on the account page with no effect. Still my real name. How can I change the name displayed? The software on this site is a peace of s.... Sorry if I sound rude, but I am really angry about all this. Is this site run by facebook or what?

still here???

it amazes me there are no CONTACT links anywhere on the site. makes one feel quite alone. you'd think there should be a direct link in case of fire.

just as daunting, the shop keepers dont seem to respond to complaints in here

write them a letter...... i found the contact info after alot of digging around... its very hidden and hard to find.

write them a letter

What makes you think a letter would get a response?

The site is archived; and, since your posts are not "alone" in a thread, they are permanently part of the record.

Which shouldn’t mean one can’t delete an account, which would delete or hide one’s personal gallery, personal info, messaging system, email contacts, all in one step, while leaving one’s public posts in tact.

What you can do is to change your name on the site

What may be a bit more accurate to say is, “What you should be able to do but likely can’t is to change your name on the site”

Why not just ignore p/n, never sign in again. What are there, about fifty active members at any given time. The world won't be affected either way.

People, in the hopes of just a modicum of privacy and even knowing complete privacy is no longer possible, would like to be able to delete whatever traces of themselves they can within reason. PN sends out email alerts, newsletters, maintains archives of one’s photos, one’s biography, one’s history of posting and commenting. Some of that can be manually deleted but not one’s history. While it makes sense to maintain one’s public posts for the sake of continuity of threads, there should be an easy way to delete one’s account and all non-eseential traces.

what you put out on the internet becomes public forever. should have thought of that before posting anything?

the only right to privacy is in the toilet.

btw has that mailing address changed?

None of that stops any number of websites from allowing people to cancel or delete their accounts. Seems like a reasonable request.

Just do it step by step.

Nobody said it was convenient, but it's not difficult.

I'm one of the few (the proud?) who did actually quit for almost a year and then reluctantly decided to come back.

When I quit here, I deleted all my portfolio and wiped my user id information quite easily. It took some time, but my only traces were the posts. I didn't bother to change my user id, but some people here under the present system do that nearly every week, or so it seems.

Likewise, it shouldn’t be that difficult for top-notch programmers to write some code allowing for an account to be deleted, while maintaining forum posts. More importantly, though, when was it you quit and deleted your portfolio? The reason I ask is I’ve read countless posts since the launch of PN2.0 saying how people have spent a while deleting photos only to discover the next day that they were back or couldn’t even save the deletions to begin with. At some point, I seem to remember the reappearing deletions issue was being put on the “to do” list. I don’t know if it’s been “to done” yet.

Like JDM wrote. The post are preserved for archival reasons and we are advised that posts can not be deleted or edited after a short period of time and we can take our portfolio, galleries change our name etc with us. On the other hand there should be a simple process to remove everything we can and have our names dropped from the active member list or hide them in one or to two steps.

Some time ago, I found the portfolio part of the site was displaying my other name, which was entered in 'Contact details' at photo.net/my/settings ; that seemed wrong: the point of a screen name is that it should be the one displayed. Anyhow, I changed that entry so I'm now Dustin in both halves of the site (though I have nothing in the portfolio anyway).

IIRC I had a little difficulty making changes on that page stick. The solution involved logging out, manually deleting all of photo.net's cookies, and then logging back in.
