Bisides Nikon, Best place to get D610 cleaned and adjusted

My D610 really needs a good cleaning. I sent my D700 to be cleaned by someone other than Nikon before I sold it a few years ago, but can't find the receipt. Haven't been on Photo.ne for a long time. I know this is somewhere in it's archives, but not having much luck searching this site. Recommendations. Thanks

Thanks, I think I sent the D700 to Chicago so that recommendation is probably it. Cleaning is cheaper when not sent to nikon, BUT, if Nikon finds something else wrong with you camera like a small scratch on the sensor coating they won't clean your camera with out replacing that. I don't think I have a scratch on my sensor, but I didn't think there was one on my D700. I was hard pressed to find it, but it was there and had no effect on my images. Wasted lots of time and money with shipping etc. Would rather not go down that road again.

Hmm. My D700 also had a sensor scratch reported by Nikon (and since they were the only people ever to clean it, I have good reason to believe they caused the scrach). They just mentioned it as a curio, though, and they certainly didn't charge me for it.

Nikon service options that I've seen usually have a "tell me before you do anything" option, along with a "repair anything cheaper than a specified amount without asking, to avoid delay". On the other hand, they've interpreted "please clean the sensor and mirror box" as "please dismantle everything and clean it", which cost more than I expected. It appears that clear communication is quite a good idea. (I've also had an argument with them about the difference between barrel distortion and field curvature, so it depends a bit whom you're talking to.) I hope you have better luck if and when you next have to deal with Nikon service.

I'm sure there are cheaper (and faster) solutions, although Nikon UK have got a bit better over time. I admit I go to them partly because they're within driving distance from work - and my house has (at least until recently) had too much cat hair in it to make cleaning sensors myself a good idea. Given a suitable environment, sensor cleaning isn't rocket science, so I won't claim Nikon are the only people qualified. My biggest problem has been that I take the camera to them specifically to avoid the faff and risk of it going through the postal system (given that I'm not at home to receive it during working hours), and I have to double check the instructions each time because they don't seem to have a way to label it "customer collects".

Good luck with whomever you chose, though!
