SDHC Replacement

Recommended Posts

Had a Sandisk extreme plus 32 fail yesterday - no big thing as I was home and simply replaced it with another. However, between the used D 7200 I recently got and a digital frame playing the latest trip, I am down to one spare and so will need to buy a couple of new ones. I don't do movies, and not much with bursts. Anyone with recent good deal / good results experiences or suggestions?

I've been using Sandisk Extreme Pro cards (CF and SD) for 15 years without a failure. I always get them from B&H so I don't have to worry about getting fakes. With my current Pentax K3s I've been using 32 gig SDHC cards and they keep up with the camera and download to my computer quickly, so that's my recommendation.

why such high MG cards?

More is better? Lack of info? What was on sale? On one of my major trips I might take a couple of thousand photos - recent trip to Bermuda over 5 days, around 720 between two cameras. I mostly shoot JPEG Large Fine, but sometimes will shoot a bunch RAW - I'd rather not have to worry about running out of space.

A few small ones as apposed to one big one would be a good safeguard against card failure. When I purchased my Fuji, they included an 8 GB card, good for a thousand photos. They also included 4% rewards on the purchase. I'll bet every one of us used that 4% for a spare battery.

Thanks - good thought. Over all the years I've shot digital, this is the first SDHC failure. Saw a good deal on a multi pack of 16 GB might be another way to go.

I've standardized on a card size that, for me, is a day's worth of shooting for each camera I carry (you figure your own rate of shooting). Usually carry enough for the planned length of the trip. I back them up to a card-deck sized 1 TB drive and a laptop each night, but usually don't reuse the cards until I get home.

I (knock silicon) have never yet had a CF card failure.

I shoot raw all the time, so bigger cards make sense for me. If you only shoot JPEG, smaller cards would be fine, although the better cards only seem to come in at least 16 gig any more.

I have had so much memory hardware fail and loose file when computer fail or replaced that I finally just rented a terabyte of storage on One Drive at $65 a year. It is cheaper than buying chips and thumb drives and the files are safe and accessible from any computer, ipad or smart phone.

I just bit the bullet and signed up for BackBlaze which backs up on the cloud with unlimited storage. You can back up your laptop, and an unlimited number of external hard drives for $60/yr or $95/2 years (rather unbelievable, really). The down side is it is very slow on the initial backup. It took several weeks for my initial one and that was even using high speed ethernet connection at work, but once that's done, you basically forget about it. It backs up automatically. Of course I'm assuming that the company will not be going out of business. This also alleviates the need for rotating several hard drives stored in different locations.
