NX2 any way to update?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've not been around for a long time I know. Done very little photography over the last few years. During the Fall my computer died and I had to get it fixed and they formatted my HD. I'm trying to figure out if there's any way of locating the last updates for NX2. I tried to do a search but only got photographs. The site has changed so much since I was last here.

If not, what software are you all now using?

Much depends on what camera you are using, NX2 was not updated for a few years now, but if you are using an older model DSLR then you can still use NX2 ,, which youcan download a full install for from Nikon. You do need your old activation key though if you want to keep it running for more than 1 month ..

Thank you, I have my activation code and I have my disk for NX2. The problem is, I want the updates to the version I now have which is 2.0.0 and I know there's updates to it. I'm working with a D800 and a D300. NX2 works for both of them. I'm trying NX-D right now and I didn't like it when it came out and I don't like it right now. I can't make heads or tails out of it. I've contacted Nikon as well. Hopefully they can help or I'll have to go to my old version Photoshop. Thank you for trying to help.

This might be a good opportunity to switch to a different raw converter. I was shocked how bad NX-D was and to find NX2 discontinued in 2014 when I got the D810 which wasn't supported by NX2. I gradually started to use ACR/PS/LR more than I had in the past and it is workable. You can get them in a photographer's subscription for a fairly moderate monthly fee. Another option is DxO PhotoLab but the company seems to be undergoing some financial issues / restructuring and it might become another piece of software that you grow fond of and be discontinued. I hope not; they purchased the Nik technology from Google and I find some of DxO's features (their PRIME NR algorithm and their distortion correction) to be really good.

But, Adobe at least is financially sound thanks to monthly payments from each customer. There is also a free alternative called Darktable if you find Adobe too expensive.

Thank you for your recommendations. I will take them under consideration and try things out to see what I feel comfortable with.

I do not find any Capture NX2 related links on nikon support site anymore. I find Capture NX-D to be rather good for free software. I have not tried Lightroom so maybe I do not know what is missing.

In addition to the tools mentioned by Ilkka, another very fine raw editor is CaptureOne; I could not get used to the user interface of Lightroom, and moved to this tool instead. It's not cheap, but it can still be bought on a perpetual license and it is actively developed. As much as I liked Capture NX2, since it's been dormant for a long time, in the meantime all other packages made nice steps forwards, so indeed this might be as good a moment as ever to start migrating. Your next Nikon camera will not be supported in CaptureNX2, so inevitably the time will come you'll have to switch anyway.

Googling for "Capture NX2 download", it seems the software can still be downloaded from Nikon's site: Nikon | Download center | Capture NX 2. This should give you the last version.

Here's a link to the last version (2.4.7) of NX2

Nikon | Download center | Capture NX 2

I personally would option for version 2.4.6 though

(not sure this link still works Capture NX 2 Ver. 2.4.6 Software Download )

as Miguel Bagnon has written a smart in between program http://www.bagnon.com/raw2nef/

which allows use of NX 2.4.6 with camera's like the

Sony A6000, Sony A7, Sony A7II, Sony A7R, Nikon D750, Nikon 7200, Nikon D810, Nikon D500 and Nikon D5

Thank you so very much Wouter Willemse. Your link was what I tried to get through Nikon's site and it simply would not come up. You have restored Capture NX2 to me :) Thank you so very much :) I don't get why Nikon seems so happy to hide it from their site.

Thank you so very much Paul. Why would I want this one over the last version released? I'll see if I can have them both on my computer. Thank you I will Bookmark these links.

I guess I'm the only one who sees NX-D as mostly an improvement - there's now a decent built-in browser, and I prefer saving edits to sidecar files than directly back to the NEF. Control points are gone, but are still available in the free Nik collection.

And where can I get the Nik Collection then? Forgot about that one. So upsetting to have lost everything

You should be able to get it from DxO Labs now. They are said to be working on new versions to be released soon.

A little worryingly, DxO are in administration, although they swear blind that this is just a logistical thing and that it won't affect software development (I'm really hoping this isn't bluster). I've been using their stuff (Optix Pro, then PhotoLab) for a while, fairly happily, and they seem to respond to bug reports. PhotoLab now has the U-point thing if that's what you miss - I never used the Nik stuff, so I don't know what else I might be missing out on.

My recollection is that the second last version of NX2 was stable and the last was not, so I would go with 2.4.6. I found some stability problems with the very last versions of both NX2 and View NX2.

Never had any problems with either version , so that may be due to the environment where it was installed in..

Or, how the program was used. ViewNX2 last version introduced a "feature" that when the directory browsed contained a number of images that was in the thousands it would crash. It would always happen until I reduced the number of images in the directory. The previous-to-last version handled this situation just fine. Also the first versions of ViewNX-i had this bug, whereas I haven't seen it happen in a while now, in recent releases. I don't recall what the problem with the last version of Capture NX2 was, but it did involve crashing.

Irrespective of what the environment is, a program is supposed to contain enough error checking that it doesn't crash. Especially when it is mostly only Nikon software that do the crashing and others do not, in the same environment. Current Nikon ViewNX-i doesn't crash all that often but it hangs indefinitely e.g. when deleting a number of images based on filter settings (ratings) and after that it can take an hour for the program to become responsive again. This happens often several times per day, though not every time.

The bugs are not computer-specific or OS version specific as they seem to continue from windows 7 to 10 and from one desktop to another (and my laptop as well, a different manufacturer than my desktops). I think the problem is that Nikon perhaps do not test the software with directories that contain a large number of image files, and most users have simply given up on reporting bugs to Nikon and just use 3rd party software. I guess I should try again reporting the bugs to Nikon and see if they eventually can get it to work.
