One of the things that re-lit my photography was the possibly crazy decision to bring some vibrant, go-go-go bird dogs into our life. The younger of the two - still ready for action and some varmint killing (between naps) - is our German Shorthaired Pointer named Regan ... who just turned 14 years old. She's remarkably lively, and still runs the place. She's The Queen. Or, princess, at least. So of course, my wife wouldn't let the occasion pass without a bit of theatrical homage to the dog's nature. And here we are. What's everyone else been shooting? Share!

Heimbrandt: Lovely shot, but pedantically I think that's a greenfinch, not a goldfinch. Although I have very limited credentials as a twitcher. (More photos of Staines-based big white ducks possibly coming when I get to download some images...)

Thanks - and yes, it is a greenfinch. I though of one but wrote the other’s name...

Hope to see those ducks in a coming Nikon Wednesday.

varmint.thumb.jpg.c6291c7b53fce93dea3b17c191d449c9.jpg And the varmints are out, digging holes for us to fall into. But at least I get to take out my big lens and shoot at something!

While I wait for the usual load error to go away I'll mention that this and the above were shot with a D7100 and a200-500/5.6 lens.

No luck.....maybe on edit.....

Thanks, Heimbrandt. For some reason I do the same thing with green- and goldfinches.

I did take some swan shots, but they're not very interesting. But spring has now properly reached the area near my office, which is where you're going to get a lot of photos from until I get better at planning. In the interests of not boring you all with entirely identical photos of the same area, I wheeled out the 58mm Petzval (for those unfamiliar, the swirl is due to extreme field curvature and astigmatism; it's an optical effect, not editing) - and learned something new: it won't focus at infinity on maximum effect setting. It's really a portrait lens, but I'm standing by my "too self-conscious to shoot strangers" position, so I found other ways to play with the toys. All of these are wide open (f/1.9) for effect, and because I couldn't be bothered to carry the Waterhouse stops with me, and still a D810 because I'm still saving for the D850...
