RAW processor ON 1 2018.1 and others

Recommended Posts

I use Nikon software for my raw processing. And I need to change to something better. I do not like the Adobe subscription plan so Lightroom and Photoshop are not candidates I wish to pursue.

I was just about to download and try out ON 1 2018.1 as it seemed to have everything I needed until I learned it does not support dual monitor (yet)--one for the image and the other for the panels or templates for your settings. I have looked at Capture One Pro 11 but it looks to be more than I need.

Is there another program I should check out that has most of the same features as ON 1 but supports dual monitors?

I use windows 10 on my laptop and desktop. I do not require a tethered shooting feature.. My Nikon bodies are a D 800e, D 500 and D 810.

Thanks for any suggestions.

DxO Photolab - incorporates the U-Point technology that Nik had developed for Capture NX/NX2. Software also has some very powerful denoising algorithm. And, of course, the database of lens correction modules that is constantly being enlarged. Edited by Dieter Schaefer

The "problem" with these choices is that the differences in user interfaces are much a personal preference; I used to use Capture NX2 and liked it a lot, while Capture NX-D just never worked for me due to how buttons and sliders look and feel. For this reason alone, I can only recommend to try multiple options. I ended up with Capture One Pro, and while it's not the cheapest option available, I feel I get good value out of it. I expected to miss the U-Point option that NX2 had, but in C1 it's fairly easy to make masks from colour selections, yielding more or less the same flexibility as U-Point had.

C1 supports dual monitor, though I never used it, so no idea whether it brings big advantages.

I'd give On1, DxO, ACDSee Pro and Cyberlink PhotoDirector all a try; and as an alternative if you don't need catalog options, also Affinity Photo. Try for yourself which way of working suits you best. One at a time, so it can be a time-consuming test, but in my view, getting your workflow right once saves a lot of time down the road.

Thanks for the very good advice from all of you. It looks like I will have to try out some of these. I am not sureIi need a Catalog function, but if I found one that was "foolproof" I might start using it.

I have stuck with NX2 because I love U Points so DXO Photo labs is one I will try out for sure. Its manual is so clear and well written; I hope the program works well for me. The ON 1 manual is well organized and clear too. I am not familiar with ACDSeePro and Cyberlink PhotoDirector but will check them out.
