chulster
Nikon 28-105mm AF-D the best one mentioned anywhere in this thread one of my top three I concur. The 28-105mm is a phenomenal value at around $110-120 in excellent condition. A perfect sunny-day, walk-about lens.
Andrew Garrard
Oh, I hadn't realised we'd got around to the 28-80. I kept mine, mostly because it's not worth anything to sell. I bought it on KR's recommendation as one of my first Nikon lenses (before I knew better); it's not bad on a D700, although it's clearly compromised on a D810. To me, the main benefit is that it's comically fast to focus on an F5 because it's so light. I've been known to use it as a really light option for video shooting (since I only need 2MP quality) - but then I only picked up a 24-70 f/2.8 Tamron relatively recently, which is better in all ways except weight and cost. I got the 28-80 at the same time I got my 28-200mm G - which did sterling service as my most-used lens (and body cap) on my D700, and which showed itself to be a mess of colour fringes on a D800. The 28-200 got much more use, due to the extra flexibility and not being all that much bigger. The 28-80 is one of the few lenses I'd make a point of putting a protective filter on the front of, since I believe it has an outward-facing soft plastic aspheric. Plus I believe you can see where the barrel is taped together. But I've not looked at it in a while, so I may be maligning it.
steve_g2
After watching a youtube of a destructive disassembly of the 28-80 I had to get one. Must be 400 parts in that little devil.
Woolwinder
I have the 35-70 lens along with the 24-70 F2.8 lens. For a walkabout lens it is ideal on a sunny day, it is used on either a D810 or a D3x. I like it.
