The only thing I need to be able to do is add text to images and make collages with several images, hopefully with a way to make collages for 2, 3 and 4 images. Both are pretty full-blown image editor, so there might be a bit of a learning curve unless you worked with programs like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or similar. "I want to work with .jpg images and also save in the .jpg format." - Not a good idea to save intermediate work in the JPEG format. It's 'lossy' and quality will degrade with each re-save. Use GIMP's own XCF format until the project is finished. XCF saves layers and other settings intact. When the project is finished, then it's safe to use a jpeg save.
