Stuck(?) shutter speed ring on Konica SII rangefinder

Recommended Posts

Hmm... I'm still waiting for

my tax refund from 2016.

It's so complicated, my

CPA's had to file for five

extensions...

Wow! Complications due to hurricane damage?

Sensible. You may have to repeat the process in the morning... But well done, in the meantime!

Thanks, Rick. I wasn't aware of the possible need for a repeat, but the first time I tested it the next morning, I thought I might still have a problem. The blades hesitated for ~1/2 a second before opening and closing. A bit stuck, I guess. But, after that, they seem to work fine, so I didn't repeat the process.

So, now I've cleaned all the exposed lens elements, with lens cleaning fluid and a lens cloth. I reinstalled the lens assembly and screwed down until the rubber started losing its grip, but I really don't know if it's far enough or too far. I didn't think ahead far enough to take a photo of the position prior to removing it.

Is there a way to tell if you've gotten the lens back to where it belongs, other than seeing if your photos are all out of focus?

Screwed in as tightly as you have should be fine. It's not like a helical with several start positions, just a thread like a M42 mount. I'm pleased to hear it's still firing; as a consequence of this correspondence I got off my butt and gave the same treatment to the Konica S I mentioned with the stuck shutter. It freed up, but when the fluid dried, the blades stuck again, and subsequent treatments over a 24 hour period produced the same results. In the past I've set an arbitrary limit of four attempts to cure a shutter using this method, and if the problem persists I'd consider it time for a full CLA. Let's hope yours keeps working!

Wonderful to read this success story! I think Rick's four time rule should be adapted too. I spent a very long time two or three hours each over two non consecutive days before I was convinced it would not gum up ... I am a patient man Davcaz :)

The one shutter I used naphta on the helicals and it drifted on to the shutter blades... a year later it was gummed up again. I performed a similar ritual on a Contaflex and I am confident from my time investment that it will be ok. The Contaflex was (possibly) due to leaving it on a windowsill in the afternoon sun and (possibly) some melted lube stuck the blades in the open position so it never shut down to the set aperture.

Naphta the elixir of life but use it wisely!

That's good to hear. Thanks!

That's not so good to hear. Mine is still snapping properly, so I'm hopeful that it will continue to do so, at least for awhile. I'd like to get to use it at least once. The viewfinder on it is among the nicer ones I've looked through. Much as I love my Ricoh Five One Nine, its viewfinder is not my favorite.

Thanks, Chuck! I honestly did not expect this good an outcome or that it would be so easy. It may seize up, again, like yours did, but it's working for now. That's all I can ask, really.
