Where are your photos?

I recognize most of the posters here by name and what kind of photos they like to take, its like a small camera club. Occasionally I see a new name or want to remind myself of the work of a veteran member only to find a empty gallery. Come on, start a gallery and post a few photos. Should be a requirement if you spend a lot of time here.

I disagree, as I dislike requirements outside of a college education or a licensed profession. Privacy seems to be a long-forgotten prerogative. A photographer is entitled not to want to make his/her photos public on the Internet. That same photographer is just as entitled to a voice and presence on PN.

 

One thought, however. There are No Words contributors who don’t have PN portfolios. But you can do a search of No Words threads, entering their name, and get a list of threads to which they’ve posted photos. That gives you the opportunity to see or remind yourself of their work. Anyway, best I could come up with.

 

I wonder if there’s software available, or if PN’s current software would allow for a mechanism by which we could click on a name and get a gallery of photos they’ve posted to threads. Seems like that could be a programming possibility, but I don’t know.

I shoot only film, and I don't care to digitize my photos, so they aren't posted here (or anywhere else). If I couldn't visit photo.net just because I don't have a gallery, I'd miss seeing a lot of great photographs, not to mention missing out on a lot of interesting discussions.

For many years I had a gallery here. These days I no longer bother. Since the new site was rolled out, there is no long any point. Other members should post galleries or not as they see fit, it's not for me to decide.

As Fred said, you can look for a member's posts in "No Words" and elsewhere if you need to see if they've posted photos. Some of the photographers from whose advice I have learned the most, for example Ellis, don't seem to have photos posted here.

I posted new work frequently, and in quantity, usually after various trips. Due to an historically harsh winter here, I have been in most of the winter, and am currently still snowed in to some degree. That, combined to a lesser extent with inconveniences of the new system have limited my participation mostly to No Words. I expect when things open up, and I am out and about, I will resume former habits. Though (IMO) a portfolio, is a useful tool to evaluate member input, it is a choice, and should not be a requirement. I do admit, strong opinions with no body of photos is reason for me to take the opinion with the proverbial "grain of salt." As others have mentioned, frequent No Words photos can serve as a 'substitute' portfolio, though can only be viewed as they appear, and not as a body of work.

My P/N gallery makes it easier for me to locate my own photos. On my computer they are arranged by year first, then subject. In the P/N gallery everything is arranged by subject only.

after the new roll out, I wanted to make a portfolio of my film and digital works. Nice feature so why not use it? I started putting my edited pix into categories where I can compare my stuff to other photogs work. Its a way of staying fresh I guess. I thought the categories were for just that... Instead I see people posting dozens of pix from one shoot, not even edited shots, just machine gunned pix up for the sake of cluttering a screen. That pushes everyone's pix to the bottom in no time. I mentioned this once in the problem forums and was told people are using the categories as a drop box service for clients. OK, so, I just let the road hogs have it. I dont put pix in my port anymore to avoid cluttering the drop box categories. Whats the sense of posting photos if no one can see them?

 

I enjoy participating in "no words" just for fun. Besides by making a showing, it encourages other people to participate... Id like to see PN get off the ground as they work on their bugz.

 

As someone mentioned above, it takes time to scan my negs and do resizing n whatnot; so why bother if the road hogs are going to bury you? Ill be in no words if you want me.

point of view

I post photos in my gallery here to let local folks with a suspicious nature I randomly meet around town know I'm not an insurance adjuster or investigator.

 

After they google my name on their smartphone, their demeanor and attitude noticeably changes for the better.

 

That happened several years ago while watching a local construction project where their backhoe operator was about to slide into and spill diesel and motor oil into an environmentally sensitive and protected spring river. The foreman was wondering who, what and why I was standing around watching them work which as a public citizen on public land I had every right to do. A city worker with one of those orange vests knew me (but I didn't know him) and used his smartphone to show the foreman that I was a photographer. I'm pretty sure my Photo.net gallery popped up. The foreman relaxed after that but still didn't like me watching. Here's some of their work and how dangerous it was...

 

I like to see people's photos too. But I can't force people to post.

I just think that if folk who have the ability to post cartoons they also have the ability to share their photos. Unless they think they just want to be thought of as little smart cookies.

 

This is a site dedicated to photography. Methinks.
