Tricky shutter on Nikon FE

Hello all,

 

I've got an FE that I've had for years. The shutter has always been a bit fussy. I have to press directly downward on the shutter button or if not, it won't engage. Is this something that can be fixed or is it likely that I need to have a part replaced? I've had the camera serviced twice but to no avail. Any recommendations?

I don't know what the problem may be, but it may be worth spending a couple dollars on a "soft shutter release" that might provide a better direct, downward press. If you search Nikon soft shutter release on eBay there are plenty of listings for generic ones for ~US$5.00 (2 buttons).

Thanks Eric. I hadn't heard of these and it sounds like it might be just the thing, as it seems to work like a cable release from what I've read.

Just to add, early FE models had a known problem with the shutter sticking - I'm sure that there was a recall. When Nikon fixed the fault they put a blob of red paint up the tripod bush. What serial number is yours?

Ah, thanks. No red blob. The serial number, I'm fairly sure, is FE 3894728 although it's pretty worn. It's a black FE.
