Lens Rentals has a review of the Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art MTF figures

LINK

Many of us already have a Canon 24-105, but for those who don't, there's the link.

Since they really try to get decent sample size and provide information on variation, I find the Lens Rentals reviews the best around, especially as compared to reviews based on one (1, count them) lens.

Of course, the lens is available in mounts other than EOS, but ....

When Roger started to reveal the amount of sample variation some time ago, I was more surprised than I care to admit. I always expected "some" variation but the actual data revealed that comparing lenses based on single sample measurements is quite useless. Yet, except from lensrentals, we are still seeing those "lens test" and are subject to the often heated discussions that result because of them.

Of course, the lens is available in mounts other than EOS, but ....

What's the "but" for? I choose the Sigma over the Nikon 24-120 (and 24-85) and am a bit surprised at how close the 24-105 and 24-120 are in lensrentals test. Based on what I've read elsewhere, I expected a bigger difference - especially towards the longer focal lengths.

PS: I've seen the lensrentals post before Roger took down the "stopped down" results - they really looked to good to be true for the Sigma 24-105. And as it now turned out - they were; it was a mistake in the way the data were presented.

PPS: I sure wish Roger had included the new Sony FE 24-105/4 in that comparison. I really wouldn't mind using a mirrorless camera for my walkaround.

I do not have this lens, but I have been generally pleased with the three Sigma lenses I do have, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4 Art and the 150-600mm C. I could see the 24-105 f/4 having appeal, a nice walking around lens vs the 24-70. For me, I have the 24-70 f/2.8 and can swap to the 70-200mm f/2.8 so I will probably pass on any version of this lens. But it certainly is a nice option.

Sigma makes nice lenses imo.

Cheers, Mark
