mwmcbroom
I've been copying slides using a 55mm f/3.5 pre-AI Micro-Nikkor for a few years. Recently I came across an AIs 55mm f/2.8, so I picked it up and tried it out in my slide duping rig. Well, I've owned that 55/3.5 for about 25 years and it has always been one of the sharpest lenses (if not the sharpest) in my collection. So you might imagine my surprise when I compared the results from the AIs 55/2.8 against the 55/3.5 in my dupe rig and found that the images produced by the AIs 55/2.8 were noticeably sharper than those produced by the 55/3.5. So it was with not more than quite a bit of sentimentality that I retired my 55/3.5 from active service. The 55/2.8 was simply that good. So that's my recommendation. Go with the 55/2.8 Micro Nikkor. When used with a FF camera, the best and easiest way to dupe slides is using a set of bellows with a slide and rollfilm stage, like the PS-4 (which fits the PB-4 bellows, my favorite Nikon bellows). I have used EOS cameras with Nikon lenses for years, thanks to a small, thin adapter ring I bought on eBay some nine years ago. And I've been very happy with the results. In fact, one of my dupe rig versions uses an EOS as the camera, but everything else is Nikon. Edited January 19, 2018 by mwmcbroom
