You are invited to upload one or more of your landscape photos and, if you’d like, to accompany your image with some commentary: challenges you faced in making the image? your intent for the image? settings? post-processing decisions? why you did what you did? the place and time? or an aspect you’d like feedback on? And please feel free to ask questions of others who have posted images or to join the discussion. If you don’t feel like using words, that’s OK too—unaccompanied images (or unaccompanied words, for that matter) are also very much welcomed. As for the technicalities, the usual forum guidelines apply: files < 1 MB; image size <1000 px maximum dimension.

This is from a bit over a year ago, south of Trinidad in northern California. I just learned something from this one regarding the effect of scale on the interaction between contrast and detail. I was deciding between two images to post here, and from the thumbnails I decided that I liked this one best. Once I saw them full screen, though, I liked the other better. It took about 15 minutes of fiddling around with the image to figure out what was going on: I needed to significantly increase the contrast in the foreground to make the impression of the full-screen version match that of the original thumbnail—lack of detail in the thumbnail had meant that the sand ripples stood out a lot even without a contrast boost. After the modifications, I like the thumbnail of the other image the most and the full-frame version of this one the most.

This "rocks and water" image was taken on Lake Superior from Minnesota's North Shore. This was about 1982 and I was using a Pentax 6x7 with color negative, which was difficult to scan to get accurate colors for me. These are among the oldest rocks on earth, at 2.7 billion years old!Scan-160924-0009b.thumb.jpg.baf7947c61890bd13883ce6bd5675299.jpg
