mark_stephan2
Got a notice from Canon that they have released firmware 1.1.8 for the 6D. I just checked my 6D and it is using 1.1.6. The email said I can upgrade to the new version even though I don't have 1.1.7 installed. What are the benefits of upgrading? I don't own or use any of the lenses this upgrade supports. Are there benefits to the upgrade not mentioned by Canon?
JDMvW
The director of our scientific illustration unit always ran all his machines on the OS and software they came with. He rarely had any problems. It's on the order of "if it works, don't fix it". On the other hand, when it comes to firmware/software in general, I've tried to keep my cameras up-to-date, because there are often little tweaks that fix problems that haven't yet emerged or simply make the machine work better. All the same, follow Gates's Law* - never install any upgrade until it's been out there for a week or two. ________ * Gates's Law = Never install version 0.0 of anything. Mark Keefer
1.1.7 -Corrects a phenomenon in which when using the camera with the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens, even if lens aberration correction is set to "Enable", correction will not be applied. 1.1.8 - Fixes a phenomenon in which standard exposure may not be obtained, or an irregular exposure may result, when Silent LV (Live View) shooting with the following TS-E lenses: TS-E 50mm f/2.8L MACRO, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L MACRO, or TS-E 135mm f/4L MACRO. Do you think you need it? If you do decide to update the firmware, consider taking some test shots before and after to see if any improvement or change in noise and/or image quality. It might be an interesting test. Shoot the same subject under the same light with the same settings so it will be easy to see if any changes. Good luck. Cheers, Mark
