Jochen_S
I'm new to that stuff and hoping somebody can share their experience. - I have a 5D IV. Thanks in advance.
jdebever
Haven't found any real test, but i found this link: Canon 5D mk IV how short of a battery life is expected? Wifi looks to be bad. hope this helps. J.
JDMvW
Since you are not getting many responses, I'll just say, for what it's worth, that I rarely use live view and have turned off the rear display on my older Mark II 5D. The batteries seem to last forever before they need a recharge.
Dieter Schaefer
Haven't used live view enough for it to make a real difference - but based on my experience with some Sony mirrorless, I expect the LCD and the constantly on sensor to provide a quite efficient battery drain. Ditto on the Wi-Fi (which I have turned off on all my cameras).
Jochen_S
Thanks a lot to all who got back, especially @jdebever for the link. I have absolutely no complaints about battery life in radio-silent SLR usage style. - I took some 2K5 pictures on my first charge, IS on, admittedly with a leaden finger in continuous mode. The rest reads scary enough to get some grip + spare batteries, to try shooting via Wi-Fi remote live view.
model mayhem gallery
I have two batteries in the Canon grip and use WIFI, GPS and live view all day and haven't had to change batteries. However, when i am shooting indoors I purchased the battery with a DC 12v power plug on the end. I plug this into my Vagabond DC-AC power and power my Iphone (remote monitor), lights, camera and Zoom F4 for hours. It is absolutely worth it to get the external power plug it is dirt cheap and works great. I can now use video camera batteries to run my camrea and never have to worry about batteries dying during all day long video shoots.
Mark Keefer
I can't give you an exact figure. Wi-Fi and/or GPS will drain the battery faster and you will notice. I have a grip on my 5D MK IV so I am using two batteries, this gives me some more play. GPS is not that important to me unless I am out in another state like roaming the Rocky Mountains. I may turn on GPS and shoot a couple shots to get the coordinates of an area once in a while and turn GPS off, I don't need GPS on every photo from the same location like shooting moose at Rocky Mountain National Park. SO I may have a photo with GPS, but really, I know where I was shooting. I suppose it would be handy if you were hiking and exploring the Appalachian Trail or boating the Mississippi or Everglades. I can see it may have uses for some. If so take extra batteries. As far as Wi-Fi, I play with it on occasion at home and rarely in the field. With the grip and 2 batteries, I can play for an hour or two, until I am done and I still have over half my battery life, maybe more. This is something you will have to experiment with yourself. If you are planning to use these features a lot and shoot a lot, taking extra charged batteries would be a good idea. It is always a bummer when you have traveled to a location to do some photography and the battery is dead. Cheers, Mark
Trigger_Happy
I have GPS on all the time and I occasionally use live view. I don't have any issues with battery drain. To me the battery seems to last long enough. Also, the Mark IV will accept the LP-E6 of which I have several. However, when doing video work the Mark IV will run through a battery fast. When doing video the LP-E6 will not suffice for some reason. I guess the power consumption is larger. I don't know if this answers your question.
