Jochen_S
My lens flared nastily last week, so I probably should get a hood for 46mm thread and 28mm FOV. What should I be looking for? - Reasonably priced sources preferred. I own files, a Dremel clone and even black paint and don't mind my gear looking theft proof. If there are non Zeiss hoods worth getting for the other bodies and 21mm FOV please name them too. Thanks in advance.

Greg M
Hoods for ultra-wide lenses are not going to do a very good job of preventing flare. The hoods are so wide to prevent corner shading that there's little protection from the sun, and you can see that in the above image. No third-party (cheap) lens shade is going to be any better. If the sun is in front of you, it's likely going to be in the field of view or just on the periphery, and if the lens design is not good at preventing issues with flare, well, that's just a sign you cannot use it with those type subjects unless you can just live with the flare. I cannot use my M. Zuiko 7-14mm f2.8 from my Olympus E-M1 outfit against the light. It's a horrible design in terms of shooting against the light. Fortunately for me, both the Leica 18mm and 21mm Super Elmars are pretty darn flare-resistant. They're not infallible (no lens is), but for the most part I can shoot either into the light with few to no worries. The shades are there primarily to protect the front elements from knocks and being able to store the lenses face down in a pocket of my bag so I can pull them out and not have to worry with removing and remounting the front caps. Ed_Ingold
You could use any shade which fits, intended for a focal length according to the cropping factor, 1.3 x 21 mm (27 mm). Lens shades never work perfectly, and any bright light striking the front element will cause flare, even outside the field of view. Leica shades, as above, are designed to fit a range of focal lengths. The same Leica shade is marked for 35 mm and 50 mm.
Jochen_S
Thanks all for getting back. @greg: I had the sun outside the (28mm!) VF and wasn't aware of it. A not uncommon problem with ultra wides on crop sensors. I'll try some Chinese offerings on ebay. I just hoped somebody might know a good or promising solution, maybe from the MFT or video realms.
