Importing To Australia

Does anyone In Australia know whether importing by post, either new or

used, will attract customs duty?

The Customs Department were very helpful to me years ago when I asked the same question.

There is no customs duty on cameras but you must pay State Sales Tax. This was before GST, so it is more feasible now. When I queried it State sales tax was over 30 per cent.

Peter, write to them, their address is in all Australian phone books, and then you have their answer in writing (Unless someone has a more up to date answer).

The Customs web site at: http://www.customs.gov.au/osgoods.htm will go some way to answering your question. As I understand it, GST is payable @ 10% but it won't be collected on items imported by post with a value less than $1,000.00, or $250.00 where they come in by air cargo such as UPS etc.
