Nikon 1 J5 - A Field Report

Recommended Posts

I have 2 J5's. The 2nd was a gift i couldn't refuse. A VR stereo pair i thought. But found there is no way to sync trigger them. Indeed there is NO ir remote at all, just an awful wifi app. Why cripple an expensive camera by not fitting a 50p ir sensor? There is enough real-estate for 1 front and back. Crazy Thinking!

Then there's the idiotic list of lenses the J5 won't use, not can't use.... my J1 uses my 200-500mm (via FT-1) with wonderful results. AF and VR make long range birding shots possible. 1400mm f5.6 is FUN

However, i love my 1 Series cams. I hope the family hasn't been terminated!

I may convert my spare J5 to IR use...cannot decide.

PS. Very nice, helpful review of a camera i know well.

Yes, the J5 does have some curious omissions. I agree about the IR sensor - it is always helpful to have a way to trigger the shutter remotely. I find the lack an of exposure bracketing function particularly irritating. But at its heart it is a capable camera with great image quality. I have even managed to eke out decent cityscapes at night with the J5, although its low light capabilities are hardly stellar.
