Loose lens focus ring

I have <em>Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS II</em> lens and in an attempt to remove UV filter, I've accidentally made the focus ring loose, so it moves up and down a bit while I focus and has overall "cheap plastic" feeling.<br /><br />Is it possible to fix this?</p>

Probably not without sending it to Canon or a third-party repair shop. Since the lens sells (used) for $70-90, you'd be better off just buying

a used replacement if it really bugs you. If the image quality isn't suffering, I might not do anything, simply because I always found the MF

ring on the 18-55 (all versions) pretty coarse even when new.

<p>The cheap plastic feeling goes with all those lenses. It might be a chance to get the newer STM version which has a non-revolving front filter mount, better for polariser?</p>

<p>As far as the filter, have you tried a filter wrench?</p>

<p>Thanks for your answers, I'll keep it this way and buy the STM version someday. I have a friend of mine who disassembled some of his lens and repaired inner issues, so I had to ask whether is there chance to fix lens just with careful hands and screwdriver.<br>

About the filter - nope, I actually don't have filter wrench, but now I've perfectly learned that I won't be trying to remove tight filter without them.</p>
