a-peer Posted February 18, 2016 Share Posted February 18, 2016
For the past 3 months I have been working on water drop photography. It's been a nice tabletop diversion during the winter months. To date all my water drops have been squatty and collisions thick and heavy. I've been dickering with water chemistry, mainly adding different ratios of plain tap water with water mixed with Guar gum or Xanthan gum. I've tried 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 with no luck. I think I've found a good ration 80/20 (water/gum water). The worthington jets shoot out like they are launched when compared to earlier attempts I actually had to move the camera back to get the entire sculpture in focus. For this image the water is dyed with yellow India Ink. I like the subtle hints of color it produces.
Image specs: Single Shot Table Mounted Canon 5D-3, Canon 180mm - f/32 - SS 1/200 - ISO200 - Dual 600-EX II flashes with plexiglass diffuser panel for ceiling lights.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
pjmeade Posted February 18, 2016 Share Posted February 18, 2016
By comparison with the previous shots I'm afaid mine are going to look particularly mundane. I've bought a cheap Pentacon 50/1.8 lens for use when I don't want to risk my Sigma 50/1.4 (Airsoft).
The shots came out about as well as you would expect for a lens that used to sit on a Praktica, so I'm thinking about getting something like a 135/3.5 to go with it.
These shots were taken with the Pentacon attached to a 5D with an adaptor that calaims gives the focus beep, which it does. From time to time.
It's a motorway bridge over the Thames at Bray on Thames.

<a title="Bray Motorway Bridge - Pentacon 50/1.8 tryout" href=" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1479/24397393554_ec441282ff_c.jpg" alt="Bray Motorway Bridge - Pentacon 50/1.8 tryout" width="800" height="533" />
<a title="Bray Motorway Bridge - Pentacon 50/1.8 tryout" href=" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1622/24934706751_4a8b5d4e0c_c.jpg" alt="Bray Motorway Bridge - Pentacon 50/1.8 tryout" width="800" height="533" />
<a title="Bray Motorway Bridge - Pentacon 50/1.8 tryout" href=" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1682/24660386039_35f2fe8597_c.jpg" alt="Bray Motorway Bridge - Pentacon 50/1.8 tryout" width="533" height="800" />
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It took quite a lot of the power so I used a speedlight for main light. It was a cool trick though.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Laura Weishaupt Posted February 18, 2016 Share Posted February 18, 2016
Andrew, really nice. I like your use of the DVD. I keep one in my bag and use it as a reflector sometimes. You had nice snowflakes to work with. Most of what we had here from the last storm were pieces rather than flakes.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

What device are using? I am not familiar with worthington jets, could you please give me the URL? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
