Canon FD Photos of the Month: June 2017

Chosing to take solely Canon FD gear and leaving the DSLRs at home enabled me to be a more deliberate and considered photographer. I did not so much live my vacation through a viewfinder! The idea raised some eyebrows amongst friends back home, that is for sure.

 

Hundreds of miles at sea we'd still spot seabirds, usually skimming the waves in the distance but sometimes allowing themselves to catch a tow in the ship's large air wake. This one stayed with us for a long time, long enough for me to go back to the stateroom and grab the T90 and New FD 500 / 8!

 

Maybe we will see more of him later on?

They say six-pointed sunstars are boring. Could be, I dunno. But making them can be really fun, too.

Walking the promenade deck 7, inside the fairing below the bridge. If you look out the windows the spare propeller blades are right there, as is the ship's bow.

Approaching the UK we begin to see other traffic, here's the container ship Montreal Express.

 

Lemme check the EXIF data, er, uh, hmmm...well, I think the FD 300 / 4 L was used. It's the very rare breechlock edition, don'tcha know?

A face in the window: on watch at all times on the bridge is the lookout, a human being there to back up the other navigational aids. Most reassuring!

The end of another day, May 21st. Tomorrow we disembark in Southampton. Sad, but Italy lies ahead, MotoGP at Mugello, and a return sailing aboard QM2! So chin up, eh?

Slightly out of sequence but just for fun, a Mugello hillside getting wound up for the race. Those folks are not enthusiastic or anything.

If anyone here will be in Milan, Italy between now and July 16th and would like to see a fabulous collection of film images, head to Spazio Oberdan gallery in the Porto Nuovo district for the "Wow Gilles!" show. I stumbled upon this event after seeing handbills near my hotel! Photographer Ercole Colombo's work documents the life and career of the late (and legendary) Ferrari F-1 driver Gilles Villeneuve. I found it both moving and inspiring, a masterpiece of storytelling and fast-action photography from the pre-AF era. Well worth the €11 admission!

Well, since we're here at Mugello let's look at some more local color!

 

Tuscan hills not far from the circuit, Sunday morning...rain looked imminent but never arrived.

In living color...the tifosi. Giallo seems to be a dominant theme.

Moto3 races are usually frenetic affairs, this one certainly was.

With horsepower fairly equal these races turn into drafting battles!

How about the helicopter eye view?

Moto3 winner was #16, Andrea Migno of Team Sky VR46. It was his first victory at World Championship level, and at his home race in Italy...perfetto!

I stayed in Firenze (Florence). This is the backside of Ponte Vecchio, an old bridge of shops spanning the Arno River.
