System Issues; Attention - Glenn

Recommended Posts

The beatings will continue 'till morale improves.

I think that we have been pretty well beaten... (double entendre here folks!)

The really impressive metric was the bounce rate estimated at nearly 81%. That means someone arrives here, takes a one-shot look at the landing page--and takes off elsewhere...

The truly sad part is that, those of us who have been loyal to PN, are literally powerless to fix it. We have given it our best shots. Best example - Leslie Reid having compiled tons of information.

If Glenn and his staff can't accomplish that, where do we go? Do we complain to NameMedia? Hardly. When the initial 2.0 version was launched, because (among other things) of lots of feedback from members, Admin took it down and we were able to revert to 1.0. Why in bloody blazes isn't that an option now?

Not sure what I can say that I haven't already said fellas - I'm doing my best with the resources I have to make this place better and more appealing to both new and existing users. I see it as pointless to bring up Philip as he sold out long ago and now flies helicopters with all the cash NameMedia game him for the site. Comparing 2007 to 2017 is also dangerous as much has changed in the world of photography and how the world perceives it. v1 was not something sustainable and also had a bounce rate of over 80%, v2 is much more sustainable - so for reasons I've touched on in the past - mainly tech support is something we can get and not from 1 person that knows TCL. In terms of traffic - I've said it before I'll say it again - google traffic is a blessing and a curse. Blessing because it inflates your numbers, but curse because those people tend to visit for a photo view and they're gone. In terms of Alexa - no Alexa tags on this site so what you see there is an estimation based on those that use Amazon and where they track their users going. But no Alexa tags on this site. We have had some constructive criticism and we're doing what we can with it - yes - its slower than we ALL want - I'm in that line too. If the criticism is constructive we appreciate it and we'll continue to make improvements based on that feedback.

Glenn, I appreciate the time you put in to your most recent post. However, you really haven't addressed mine.

"If Glenn and his staff can't accomplish that, where do we go? Do we complain to NameMedia? Hardly. When this version of 2.0 rolled out, members started asking for help, noting bugs, explaining issues, etc. by the boxcar full. So, I repeat; why wasn't it taken down then? Why didn't you and your staff allow us to continue with 1.0 until you felt more than just confident that you could provide a product that was free from everything we were squawking about?

I have addressed that in numerous posts. V1 is no longer an option, technically can not be supported any longer. It ran on AOL server and was 100% custom code in TCL, from the mid-90s.

That's nothing-with Greenspun at the help, I seem to recall Alexa rankings in the top 2500 worldwide. I've been on a hiatus from the site for several years now, but it's honestly discouraging to see how things have declined relative to what I remember in the 2006-2008. It was such a privilege to get to work alongside Phillip as a moderator back in those days.

I'm also sorry to see that a lot of the old active members of the moderator team I remember-folks like Bob Atkins and Lex Jenkins-seem to have faded into the background. When I look through the fora now, I see very few familiar names as moderators-Shun on the Nikon forum is one who stands out, as is James on some of the film fora.

I can't explain why the current trend is such that it is, but I'm just sorry that this once great giant seems to be sailing into the sunset. In all honesty, I don't know that the original software was driving away new members. What does seem certain, though, is that the bugs are driving away OLD members. Let's face it, in a web loaded with crap from every direction, the old Pnet was a relief with its minimalist but very effective interface.

BTW, I still don't understand why some of these problems can't be solved. This isn't the only site on the net running Xenforo, nor is it the only Xenforo site of which I'm a member. The issues I'm having here(and now the spastic refresh problem is my biggest one) just don't happen elsewhere.

What are your issues with the forums? Generally speaking, feedback on forums side of site is positive. You need to be more specific.

My specific issue-that I've reported numerous times- is what I'm calling the "spastic refresh" that several folks are reporting, but that you claim you can't repeat.

None the less, it's happening and I'm not the only one. It just happened again when I first got on the site this morning.

I know you said only one person knew TCL. That still seems to be one more person than knows Xenforo right now.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to tell you!

After ~12 hours of being logged on, the site will go into an endless refresh loop and be rendered useless. The only solution I've found is to log out and log back in.

This DOES NOT happen on other Xenforo site I visit. The issue is here and only here. I've posted details about this problem at least a half dozen times, and I'm not the only one reporting.

Please also don't try to blame it on using an outdated browser or OS as you did the last time I brought this up. I am as current as I can possibly be on these fronts with macOS Sierra(up to date) and Firefox 54.0. BTW, the problem also happens running Firefox 54.0 in macOS High Sierra.

This has not happened to me (Macintosh OS 10.11.6).

Perhaps you have a system problem (or demonic posession)

Your workaround seems very practical while awaiting a real solution; in the meantime maybe a reduction in caffeine intake would help.

Remember: Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things. :D
