james52
I need to replace my zoom lens for the D70 and need the 300mm length. I am thinking about buying the Nikon 55-300 AF-s ED VR because it fits my modest budget. Any thoughts?
Gary Naka
What lens are you replacing with the 55-300? Have you read any reviews on that lens? The 70-300 is a similarly long lens but does not go as wide as the 55-300. Is your standard lens the 18-70? If so, I would go with the 70-300. Wouter Willemse
If budget is tight, then yes, the 55-300VR makes a good choice. I never see a problem in having a bit of overlap, so even if you have the 18-70, having a lens start at 55 need not be an issue. If the budget is a bit less limited, I would however favour the Tamron 70-300VC or Nikon 70-300VR, but they do cost a fair bit more than the 55-300 usually. james52
I am replacing a Tamron 70-300 lens. I was interested in the Nikon 70-300 but it doesn't seem to be compatible with my D70 as it is DX
Dieter Schaefer
I was interested in the Nikon 70-300 but it doesn't seem to be compatible with my D70 as it is DX There's no problem using the AF-S 70-300/4.5-5.6 (or any FX lens for that matter) on a DX camera . Don't buy the newer DX AF-P 70-300 lenses (there's a VR and a non-VR version) as they don't work on your D70.
rodeo_joe1
The non VC Tamron 70-300 is admittedly a dog. But what can you expect for its price? OTOH, the Tamron SP VC 70-300 is in an entirely different class. Sharp across the entire focal length range and with excellent image stabilisation. Equally at home on a full-frame or DX body. bob_flood1
I agree with rodeo_joe - the Tamron SP VC 70-300 is a really good lens. My niece has one and it delivers very nice images. Nevertheless, from all I read, the 55-300VR is a good lens, too. I suspect its construction isn't as robust as the Tamron - perhaps you should factor in how gentle or demanding you are on your equipment.
Wouter Willemse
Note there are two different 70-300VR lenses from Nikon: one is AF-P DX, the other is a AF-S lens. The latter will work on a D70 without issues, and that's the one I meant earlier. For the record, DX lenses work on a D70, but not the AF-P lenses. These are all very recent lenses. BeBu Lamar
So does the AF-P lenses work on the old D1 and D2?
Wouter Willemse
So does the AF-P lenses work on the old D1 and D2? No. See here: https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000035705&lang=en_GB&setRedirect=true
BeBu Lamar
So Nikon by keeping the F mount created a lot more incompatibility issues rather than not. Of those that are not supported you can't use at all or only lose AF?
