ShunCheung
Basic Guidelines: In the strictest sense, nature photography should not include "hand of man elements". Please refrain from images with buildings or human made structures like roads, fences, walls. Pets are not permitted. Captive subjects in zoos, arboretums, or aquariums are permitted, but must be declared, and must focus on the subject, not the captivity. Images with obvious human made elements will likely be deleted from the thread, with an explanation to the photographer. Guidelines are based on PSA rules governing Nature photography which also cover the Nature Forum. Keep your image at/under 1000 pixels on the long axis for in-line viewing. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site at Flicker, Photobucket, your own site, etc Are you new to this thread? We post one image per week. fgorga
I spent Friday and Saturday on Star Island, one of the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast. These islands are classic migrant traps. Night migrating birds, which get blown out over open water, head for land as the day breaks. Coastal islands (such as the Isles of Shoals) are often the first land they encounter. Thus, these islands can have fairly dense concentrations of migrants. Also, the vegetation on these islands tends toward short and scrubby. Both factors can make for very good photography, especially in spring before the plants are fully leafed out. On this trip, the birding was slow (both in terms of numbers of individuals and in the variety of species), but there were a few migrants around especially on Friday. Leslie Reid
I had stopped along on a little-used path just above the surf zone at Patrick's Point State Park, and this California ground squirrel appeared upwind about 20 feet away. It evidently thought I was a rock--it ignored me for about 10 minutes as it poked around and munched on leaves, eventually approaching to within about 5 feet. It finally wandered slightly downwind, and at that point it spun around and took off.

Gup
The first warm days here always see the wasps wake-up. They hover heavily and awkwardly bump off the warm vinyl siding like little drunken hockey fans. I've never been stung during this phase as they seem preoccupied with the business of learning to fly again. The upside is the return of the blue jays who seem to disappear for a month or so after the snow melts. This one was shot through a window with a D800E and a 105mm lens.
