Lets all try to find something nice to say about the new P/N

Recommended Posts

Tim, maybe that's what's happening. It seemed when they 1st started allowing larger images, they looked great, but lately they seem to have lost resolution and start falling apart. The thumbnails look better :(

Thanks for confirming you're seeing the same issue. Every time I've mentioned this now going on about the 5th time, no one including other forum members confirms that they see it, too. Glenn Palm, the PN administrator blames the new uploading software that came with the new design. No answer so far whether it's going to be fixed.

People do like to complain. I think the new site is fine. It's different and I'm sure I'll get used to it. The old site was fine, even though it looked like it was from 1995. Can we get back to talking about photography now????

No, this thread is about saying something positive about the new site. I don't particularly want to talk about photography until this site stops severely compressing and softening my uploaded images. It literally takes the wind out of my sail seeing this done to my photos I worked so hard to make look good.

I love the fact that if I post a comment on a thread and then click the back button, it just goes back to the list of threads instead of taking out my comment. I also like the way the thread list updates based on the most recent comment as well as showing me which ones I've read.

Zenforum can let the system put a little banner next to the avatar of the thread starter for each thread if they post down the thread. It can be very helpful to know if you're responding to the OP or to someone who asked a question in the middle of a thread started by someone else.

I use the forums and not much else. It works and I'm getting used to it. I do like a couple of things, including the little synopsis that appears when you hover over a thread title, to tell you what it's about. I also like the ability to modify an image in editing. And it's a little easier to tell whether a thread has been added to since I last looked.

I still have occasional difficulty. My computer does not do very well with flash animation, and some navigation is sluggish. I wish logins lasted longer. And one of the reasons I like the ability to modify an image on editing is that the loading of images sometimes goes awry, either returning an error, or posting double images. But a few things have been fixed, and I'm posting most of the time with a pretty rickety computer with Vista, so I should be glad it works at all.

The overall look is more modern, but it is slower to navigate through and less intuitive. I greatly miss being alerted when there is a new comment on one of my photos, and the comments at the end of the main portfolio pages. Please bring them back!

I need to make a correction on this if others didn't see the thread in the PN Help Forum I started, but I had forgotten I enlarged the browser view for this site only for reading text (which saves it when you leave and return to the site NICE FEATURE!) only I didn't check that it enlarges images as well.

Going back to the default browser zoom view made all my images match the original on my computer. No more soft looking images with weird artifacts.

Just can't believe I didn't check this before going on this rant about poor image quality on this site and I apologize to others including Glenn Palm. I hope I didn't send him on a snipe hunt trying to solve this problem.

Now I'm going to spend more time on this site and pay for membership.

So, my confusion over "what the hell is he talking about" has been solved!

Your penance is to go stand in the corner for the next two days... :p

I had a similar issue with a certain site--CNN. All of the images in the right sidebar would flicker and strobe when scrolling--and stay that way sometimes until I scrolled down again. Chasing this took multiple efforts, each attempt giving no satisfaction. I removed ad blockers, autoplay blockers, changed the configurations in the little known "dark side" configuration options of Firefox. Kept doing it. Then one day I noticed that the zoom was set at 115%. I dropped it back down to 100% and the problem went away. Duh. Many months of frustration solved by the simple click of a mouse...

After over ten years coming and belonging to PN I just don't come here very often. The site just does not work well for me. DPreview works well because I can readily find stuff that seems to be diffused all across photo.net. Fred Miranda is more navigable and it is easily to get around. My picture portfolio looks better than the old but is also confusing to me to navigate. Luninous Landscape has good and mostly thoughtful discussion. I don't even know if I am still a member of PN after paying dues for most of those ten years. I am interested in the new Sony products. Where are the in-depth reviews that I find on other sites? I can find all of this stuff easily on other sites. I just read through a thread promoting jpeg processing. I shoot sports and find that raw in conjunction with the latest edition of Light Room makes for very fast processing and web publishing of large files of pictures. Frankly I just don't feel like I belong here any longer. .

I have a long association with PN. I will say one good thing. It still exists, still stands. Without much of a guiding hand or over riding premise for its standing out. Educational?, associational? inspirational? , perhaps, but only a drib of these. Where there is life there is some hope and worth a drop by. ( it still stands.) As with Dick comment I agree, there are other places coming jup to drop by. Which offer a little of this and a little of that. I used to call this my photo home. No photo home here or any special place. I do follow some photographers who have pages that interest me. And Facebook has some offerings.
