Lou_Meluso
Going through some stuff today, I stumbled upon my original factory brochure for the Canon A-1. I got this when I purchased my A-1 from Gasser's, in San Francisco, in 1982. I still have the camera and it still works great. The brochure is filled with good information and neat photos. I looked around and couldn't find the brochure on line. For future reference sake I am attaching a PDF of it. Perhaps others will find it of interest.
User_502260
The only thing I can think of that's missing from the brochure is a mention of alternative factory interchangeable focusng screens. If I ever get the squeak taken out of my A-1 I may learn to like it more.
peteraitch

If I ever get the squeak taken out of my A-1 I may learn to like it more.

Yow! Maybe I've just been lucky, but I took mine outside a couple of days ago and it worked just like the first day I bought it new in 1985. Never been CLA'd/serviced yet, either. It hasn't seen very much use since I switched to autofocus (Nikon F80, since I objected to the Canon EF mount rip-off; and recently digital) but I still love using it.

I take longer to set up shots now (getting older, eyes and fingers not so efficient) but the example attached was quick and easy to grab. Not taken with a Canon lens, though (Canon wideangle was well beyond my budget at the time).

The only hassle is cloning out the marks left after scanning in the film - the lab used Xtol, presumably mixed with generous amounts of dust! I think I'll do my own processing next time (just like in the old days).

SCL
If you want to be a really good soldier, you might consider donating a copy of the file to www.butkus.org. He has over 3000 manuals and only asks a nominal donation from people who download from his site.

Lou_Meluso
Dennis-Yes, Thanks. It may be 1984. Everything before 1986, when I cleaned up, is a bit hazy.

Stephen-Good Idea! I just shot Mike an email with the file.

Not much info in the brochure that can't be gleaned from other sources but they are nicely made and fun to look at. I would like to see a T-90 one. I thought they made a full sized, 8.5"x11", one for the T-90.

gordon_yee
If you look at the bottom of the back cover you'll see the publication code of "0583D57" which, I believe, means that the brochure was published in May 1983.

h
Louis,
thanks for posting the PDF. The A-1 is a great little camera, especially combined with the 199A flash.

jack_fisher1
Jeff,
The squeak problem is due to the mirror flywheel dry or worn. Most often it is just dry. There is a kit offered on the bay for a reasonable amount. (email me for the link if interested.) The instructions are the important part. I have not purchased the kit, but fashioned a hypodermic needle to do the job, and have performed the lube of that part in just a few minutes for a number of A models.
Yes, I know that if it squeaks, the camera may need a thorough CLA. But if all else is well, a few minute fix may do the trick.

Jack

I am working on a student video project about the camera I was in love with as a kid (the A-1), but could never afford. It's told as if talking about a girl, but the inter-cut graphics (hopefully from the brochure) let's the audience know what I am actually talking about. JDMvW
Formerly, in the old site OS, it was possible to attach pdf files as was done in the old post. In the translation to the newOS, all of these are lost and gone forever. Now you'd have to post individual images of the pages in an acceptable format.
