a._morg
I plunked down about 300 to buy the Schneider Componon S 100mm 5.6 lens. Does anyone have any experience with this lens? Should it give me much better results than the other 75mm lens (off brand) that i'm currently using for my 6X7 negs? By the responses from you folks, i figured 100mm should be an excellent choice for the 6X7 format...and Schneider quality (while maybe not as good as Rodagon or others), still speaks for itself. What do you folks think?
gene crumpler
I would expect excellent results from the 100mm. Make a few large prints and judge for yourself.
huw_evans1
I use one of these for 6x7, and I can't really fault it. I don't know that the reputation of Rodagons is necessarily any better (I haven't used one) - the Componon S range are generally very highly regarded. (Don't confuse them with Componars, which are of lesser calibre.) Certainly for 6x7 the 100mm Componon S should blow anybody's 75mm out of the water, even just because of its coverage. With the shorter lens you are going to be operating right out at the edge of its coverage in the corners of the image - way beyond what it was designed for. The general rule of thumb is that you choose an enlarging lens whose focal length roughly matches the diagonal of the negative, which in the case of 6x7 is in the region of 90mm. At 100mm you have a comfortable margin (it should adequately cover 6x9). Huw Evans.
grunzweig photography
This is a great lens. I have used this lens for my 67 work for 2 1/2 years and have been very pleased. It is my favorite lens for its pure artistic image quality. I also use the Rodenstock 50mm (35mm)and the Nikkor 150mm (4X5). From my perspective the Componon has an edge in image quality, but not necessarily sharpness. BTW, I am a b&w photographer. Ken
j._patric_dahl_n
I have also tried this lens and it's excellent to say the least! But I bought the El-Nikkor 80/5,6N instead because I can make larger prints with it. It's also a superb lens. The Componon-S covers 6x9 too, so it can be great if you want to try this format in the future!
