I just got my used K-3 and I am so happy with all the improvements over K-5. I have not downloaded images yet but so far I am born Pentax in the excitement. And I truly want the KP to go well as I prefer lighter camera.

It is a bummer that I had a knee injury in a recent ski trip that I fall short in trying out my almost-as-new K-3. The new camera focus much faster than my K-5. Image quality -- I can't tell but the resolution is better for cropping. I am super excited about the KP but I prefer to postpone to later time. I will like to re-invest into the lenses. I keenly look into DA 21 and DA 20-40. I wish the DA 20-40 to be a tiny bit smaller and it is more likely that I go back to DA 21 or even get a Sigma 10-20.

 

If any of you can steer me with some suggestions, please feel free. My budget only allows one lens for now and I am think about the following with reasons:

1. DA 21 used as I like its size
   
2. DA 20-40 used as I prefer its weight over the 16-50 zoom
   
3. DA 16-85 new as I like its overall quality, range and weather protection
   
4. DA 16-45 used is also considered for its lower price in used market
   
5. A samyang 21mm if there is such a lens for Pentax mount or some odd brand from China in Laowa (spelling?)
   

I have DA 15 and love it but don't use it much as I don't have a chance to visit places. And I use my FA 31 and 43 more, and I do have the DA 35 macro which I used to use a lot on close up and now it is complemented nicely with DFA 100 f/2.8 WR. So it is time for me to invest in the wide prime or zoom. And please do suggest with a comment.

I was shooting the above with my old K-5 and DA* 16-50 and with flash on. I wish I get cleaner shots as the ISO and I do wish the AWB in K-3 improves over that of K-5.

I don't have any of the lenses you mentioned besides the DA 15 which you already have. I love mine.

 

I've thought the 20-40 was an interesting lens and would get one if I didn't already have the DA 40, DA* 16-50, and 18-135 which all cover that range. I'm sure it would be nicer quality than the 18-135 and of course is more versatile than the 40 and much smaller (and possible higher IQ) than the 16-50.

 

A K-3 kit with the 15, 20-40, and FA 77 would make a great compact kit with very good IQ. Today I have the K-3/15/40/77 kit with me.

Thank you Matt for your inputs. The DA 20-40 along with 16-85 interest me the most because of WR along with size. The DA 21 will be a great compliment with my 15 as well. I can't go wrong either way but I surely will go wrong in gett all . If past is any indication, I always end up getting all of them. I wish the range in 20-40 to be 16-35 instead and it will be a bonus to Pentaxians if the new lens works with both aps-c and full frame and the size is small like its aps-c lens line -- wishful thinking especially on size an weight.

 

It is funny how much I enjoy my Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 on my K-5. And that lens is supposed to be FF and I think the range in 16-35 is really useful in FF -- kind of similar in range to your Pentax/Tamron 15-30 f/2.8, which is great range for your landscape. Pentax needs some follow up on UW for K-1. Many K-1 owners go after FA 20mm f/2.8 and A 20mm f/2.8 and I saw outstanding K-1 photos from Todd. A prime in the 20 and 14 will fit my needs well even in aps-c. I am weird liking the FF essential prime angles on aps-c K-3/K-5.

I am not a macro shooter though I have a liking of food pictures. When I get the DFA 100mm WR lens, I know I will like this lens. I don't have a good amount of usage of this lens when I visited Yosemite right in MLK holiday. This is one of the few shots that I like that was shot with K-5. The editing is on purpose to bring out the contrast like an IR image.

You know, I was disappointed in the KP when it was sort of announced as the K-3II successor. I'm still hoping it isn't and waiting to see. That said, over time, I've sort of discovered that the KP might be the camera I wanted from Pentax. So, I'll wait a bit longer to see if a K-3IIs or something is released or announced, but I'm actually thinking the KP and K-5IIs will be perfect for me, with the KP getting the bulk of the use when I'm lugging gear somewhere.

 

Nice shots, btw. I really enjoyed the Yosemite series.

I ended up in re-purchasing DA 21mm f/3.2 used along with my DA 15mm f/4.0. I am still wanting a wide zoom and I wish the 10-17 is not a fish eye or if there is a cheap option out there that can beat or get close to the DA 20-40 in quality and size. I may look into the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 version or the older version.

 

I am hoping the KP to have a bigger buffer. I don't mine its slower frame rate but I do mine the filled buffer when you need to shoot in a sequence and expect it to deliver. If a refined version that is the true follow up on K3-II, the new camera will make a lot of people happy. I want it to be smaller like the KP and with everything in K3 II plus a flip-out screen like the KP and touch screen on AF points. It will be super nice if Pentax spend time on the AF to close up the gaps to others on AF performance.

I kind of feel the same way but my K-3 is holding up ok for now so I'm going to wait and see. I'm sure it's a good camera and I didn't mind the smaller batteries most of the time on my K-S2 (RIP). Based on what a good adventure camera the K-S2 was, I imagine the KP would also be good. But the K-70 might be just as good, slightly smaller, and considerably cheaper.

@matt based on your inputs on K-S2, I may look closer to K70 and KP. I don't need a fast camera but I do need a smaller setup that has a flip out screen and weather seal. I am a new comer to K-3 and I am so impressed with the camera and I wish I had gone onboard sooner as I now hardly shoot with my K-5. The K-3 is so much quicker in AF and have many subtle improvements. The K-5 does have better higher iso shooting experience but with some editing, the K-3 is about in-par. Overall, I am very impressed with K-3 and K-3II and I wish Pentax keep the aps-c up and running along with K-1.
