Sometime last week, when writing a post using Internet Explorer 11, I apparently passed my logged-in time limit because when I clicked Post Reply I got the following error:

StayLoggedIn.jpg.7906b1e916d0cb6a8586dcd0b7516d57.jpg

This seemed kind of exciting because of the Stay Logged In checkbox, which I, of course, clicked before entering my email and password to log in.

But ever since then, I can't use Photo.net AT ALL via Internet Explorer because the page refreshes every three to five seconds, making posting anything impossible. I have tried going (quickly) to my Account and using the Log Out option. It does not log me out. I have tried deleting all cookies from the browser (ALL cookies) and yet I remain logged in and the page refresh continues. Apparently, I've gone from having to log in once a day to being unable to log OUT ... and unable to use the site.

I can browse with Internet Explorer if I have javascript turned off and/or if I have cookies turned off so it doesn't "see" me, but that means I can't post.

How am I posting this, now? Via Chrome, which I don't particularly like.

I was hoping this would go away, but it doesn't seem to be doing so.

Note that I got the same error while using Chrome. Given my experience with Internet Explorer, I just used another tab to log in via the regular interface, not the error box with the Stay Logged in checkbox-from-hell.

How can I get rid of whatever it is that has been put into Internet Explorer that makes it refresh every few seconds?

@Phil_Light

You can of course set the image for this header block--and it will change in both your portfolio and gallery. To date, I have done this at least a half a dozen times and have now just given up. In some arbitrary fashion--it may be the next time I log in or a couple times down the line--it will revert back to that big damned grey block. Sigh... :(

@Julie H

This appears to have nothing to do with the "stay logged in" function, and is not specific to IE. Firefox (and versions thereof going back more than a month) will do the same thing. For me, the dependable trigger is to click on an email thread notification. As soon as I arrive at the site in the browser (by default FF), it is doing the rapid recycling. The "cure" for me is to click on the big X in the URL bar and stop the loading process.

Added to this is if I have not logged in for a week or so (something increasingly common due to a disinterest in dealing with the "site bollix of the day"), the system will have logged me out and present the login screen you posted and it too rapidly reloads After stopping the reloading--I find it is a waste of time to continue, as the user and pass entry fields are unresponsive--as in not being able to enter any text. For me, it is necessary to remove any tabs concerning PN from the browser, and start from scratch with the main PN front page and login there...

Just another day in paradise... :p

The big X only stops it momentarily, for me. It pauses, briefly, scratches its head, and starts reloading again, though it seems to me it does so even faster. It's alive!

Oh, I so want to post that little clip from Young Frankenstein...

Interesting: in my profile page all my photos are titled: "Untitled" even though they have a title when you open them individually. When you do click on the word "Untitled" it opens the profile page for one Rajesh Verma, who has no photos and apparently been a member since 2012. This happens for all my photos if you click on the word "Untitled." Weird bug in the system!

Also, what happened to the comments we had at the end of our portfolio. I had an important comment from a famous photographer I want to preserve.

When you drag photos into the "upload" window there is a bunch of info to fill in including the title, gallery, etc. This shows up under the photos in the gallery and photo sections. I don't like re-typing the title & info for each photo and wish the information would just transfer along with the uploaded photo.

Hello. I'm not sure if this is a bug, or some kind of delay of servers/cache or something like that, but I uploaded a new photo and had a typo with the description, tried to fix it. I could re-type the description and clicked "update" and it seemed to be ok, but when viewing the photo, it still shows the old description. If I go to my portfolio, and click "edit photo details", there it seems to be ok, but when viewing the photo, it's not ok. I tried to reload the whole page and logged out and in, but it didn't help.

The rapidly refreshing page issue continues for me--but only when visiting the site via an email alert. I am not sure if this is partially the culprit, but notification links to a thread are routed through a MailChimp application known as MandrillApp. To surf to the thread, the email posts a top link that first sends the browser to a redirect for photo.net at mandrillapp.com. This is how email response is being tracked.

Once I arrive at the site, the page rapidly refreshes. I can make it stop, but if I visit another page--it repeats the same recycling behaviors. The only remedy is to close out all tabs with PN on them and start again from scratch.

I do not know if the tracking redirect is causing the issue--but it is certainly worth looking at. The problem does not present itself any other time or method of accessing PN. :(

Not a problem for me. IE11 on Win 8.1. Just posting for diagnostic reference.

PapaTango, mine is still refreshing every three seconds without fail. It's either had too much Viagra, or I've landed on a pulsar and am spinning around and blaming it on photo.net. It has not logged out since the cookie-from-hell got inserted. Now I'm thinking it's an egg from Alien. It's incubating ...

Alien on Viagra on a pulsar. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been experiencing a problem over the last two or three days that virtually makes the site unuseable for me.

Whenever I load a page(forum list, specific forum, or thread), it will continually refresh and scroll up and down while doing so unless I hit X to stop it doing this.

Firefox 52.0.2, OS X Sierra 10.12.4

This thread is way too long for me to read to find out if my criticisms are a repeat:

1. when I am viewing a site page (for example, a forum thread), and click to sign-in, I should be returned to THAT PAGE after authenticating. I do NOT want to see my profile, and then have to navigate the now-harder-to-use menus to find the forum I was in, then the post, then the page of that post.

2. The 'real name' aspect was one of the good things about this forum. I honestly think less anonymity promotes a closer-feeling community and better behavior. Ending this is a loss -- not only as a policy change, but changing all existing members' names away from their real names.

3. Too hard to find the individual forums, I used to be able to navigate to a specific forum from nearly any page on the site. Now I find myself being sent back to my profile (again, see #1, I do NOT need to see this) or the photo-heavy home pages.

4. Why IS it that I need to keep re-authenticating every time I visit the site from the same browser?

P.S. I've been on this site for many years, but the new site is discouraging me from wanting to use it.

Leslie Reid.....

I have exceeded that 10K character limit in spades. My emails to some admins have gone unanswered so I am Posting this:When the PN interface was redesigned (great job BTW) something happened to 9 of my posts which you need to be made aware of. It looks like my images were incompatible with the new software and an explosion was the result….that is I gained a monstrous amount of real estate. Each post occupies about 20 pages That’s 180 Pages! You will find the exploded posts in the following links. My main concern is that these software glitches have slammed the door on the themes and prevent other posts. If possible please delete the “explosion” posts in their entirety.

I have also collected a group (46 & counting) of accidental dupes, more than 1 per theme and plain errors into a spreadsheet but those IMO could go on the back burner for a bit. I can send the list when you get around to it. The staff can “Boo…Hiss” all they want to but the lack of cleanup of these items on PN before the interface redesign smacks of starting a vast project with only half vast dedication

There is an important item missing: When I log in I am taken to my Portfolio. I can not find =any= way to get to my galleries. If I click "Gallery" along the left side of the window, I'm invited to create a new gallery, but I can't get to the old ones. BTW, I've reported this problem a few times, both here and in emails to Greg.

Rick

There have been a lot of reports in a variety of threads about things that don’t work right or important functions that appear to be missing from the new site. I think it would be useful to have a centralized list of the problems found. This might help ensure that the issues of concern to us are not lost among the other comments in all those other threads, and it also might make it easier for the development team to provide feedback on the status of the fixes that are being worked on for particular problems.

On this thread, post brief descriptions of issues you have encountered. I will try to keep an updated master list in this opening post so that multiple posts for the same issues aren’t necessary. Please keep the posts limited to bug or omission reports. I’ll be removing posts that are off-topic, but you can post discussions or suggestions on Bug Reports Part 2: the discussion. If you have a post that goes missing from this thread, simply repost it to the companion thread.

The list so far (issues we know are being worked on are in blue; those that have been solved are in green; modifications or recent additions are in magenta, need more info in red, and if it's in olive it's a feature, not a bug):

REALLY BIG PROBLEMS

Flickering refresh problem on ios devices (appears to be solvable by deleting cached redirects on device--see How-to thread)

Visitors to the site who are not logged-in members see only thumbnails in Forum posts (like No Words)--looks bad for a photo site

Screen names have been lost (partially solved by How-to #30; still a problem for anyone?)

Comments entered onto the Critique page during the evening of 22Feb disappeared (comments lost but issue solved; won't reoccur)

Unknown # of members cannot log onto site due to 403 error: forbidden request (now reported solved on 3/3/17!)

Can't see photos in one's own non-public galleries (solved with Library view option)

Important information in old database now not accessible:

all old messages have disappeared (update: they are in database and will eventually be restored)

equipment lists and serial numbers not available (update: they are in database and will be provided)

overall gallery comments are gone

equipment details (camera & lens type) that were entered with each photo uploaded to portfolio are gone

New here. I couldnt post and got the "invalid username" error. I couldnt find how to #30 as said in the first post (not really sure where to look either).

Anyway I fixed it by editing the html code of the site on the inspec element option, searching for the username placeholder, typing something, and a "new" menu appears next to inbox and alerts, mouseover and get some more options, in these options I have one that says change username. however On that page, again I had to edit the html code and put my "old" username in the code in order to save a "new" name.

Not sure if that was your #30 How To, but it worked.

1. I am unable to add comments to a thread on an ipad running latest iOS. It won't open the comment box.

2. Also I thought you were going to reduce and improve the home screen. Still way too much wasted space.

3. In my opinion there is still far too much scrolling required. Makes me visit much less.

4. What's up with all the silly screen names? Do you have to be a subscriber to change your screen name? If so I don't think it is helpful.
