California Highway 1 in Big Sur Closure

This is not a directly photography related thread, but a lot of people ask about driving on highway 1 in Central California since that is a scenic area. For those who are interested in going there in 2017, please keep in mind that the heavy rain in California has damaged the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, which has now been demolished. The rebuild is estimated to take 6 months, but these things frequently take longer. In other words, highway 1 is broken in Big Sur near the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, probably for most of 2017 if not longer.

There's still the Bixby Bridge, eh?

My sister says that the road is now cleared. We plan to go to Nepenthe's next month.

This thread is about highway 1, not 101. But the 101 closure means you can't go around the Hwy 1 closure to come up from SLO. Reopening 101 is going to happen much sooner than reopening Hwy 1.

Most recent landslide was the most damaging. Labor Day is best estimate I have seen for a fix. One resort is giving free helicopter rides to patrons who are intent on visiting.

It's not exactly a "free ride." It's a package deal starting at $4300 for two nights and going to $13,500 for four nights.

I think it's "Game Over" for California Highway 1 in the Big Sur, for some time. This massive slide took place last weekend (5/20-5/21), and the area is still unstable. More details below:
