Rod Sorensen
Lots of insects this week. Found this yellow jacket nest at the edge of the wetlands, nearly missed it because it was only about a foot above ground. My daughter accidentally kicked a nest like this while playing at a friend's house back when she was about 7 or 8. Got somewhere north of 100 stings - I remember her sitting in the bathtub counting them. Fortunately she had no significant problems. Apparently only cried for about a minute. But now at age 30, she still hates flying insects that look like they might have stingers. Despite that, her husband is exploring setting up some hives on their hobby farm. :-)
sallymack
Your poor daughter, 100 stings! Hope bee hives will be a far distance from the house on the farm. I'm allergic to bee stings, have been advised to go to the ER if I'm ever stung again. Last time I was stung as a child, I wound up on crutches due to swelling of feet and legs. I'm quite aware of flying insects.

The worse stings I've encountered from wasps have come from the smaller variety of yellow jacket that lives in holes in trees, stumps or the ground. These guys are relentless and nasty. Once they've targeted you they don't give up and will chase you for several minutes at a run. I've made the mistake of getting on their bad side both by accident and by stupidly trying to 'get even'. I've lost each time. They will literally mount an attack and chase you and their sting is quite memorable.
Matthew Currie
When she was a toddler my daughter stepped in a ground nest of yellow jackets. Fortunately for her, she was fully dressed and ran fast, and grew up without too much trauma, but she certainly did scream and run, and as I recall she had a little checkup from the doctor too. I've done it too. They are certainly nasty critters, and they sting over and over.
