I think you are asking about promoting your work? Well, I certainly do post on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. I don't do that for promotion so much as for fun. I do not have a personal website ATM. I know of at least on cinematographer who got a job via Instagram. It happens!

One way to get your work seen is to contribute to a photography website - maybe you can share a technique or a travel story or a camera review.

I think some very successful photographers work very hard at making use of social media and websites to promote their photography business. I have attended several seminars by rock star photographers covering shooting, lighting and business models, how to get the ball rolling and gain momentum. A website, Facebook Page, Twitter, YouTube and other social media outlets. To really make it, this marketing is almost a full-time job in itself, but it is all about getting seen and getting the next gig. One photographer that comes to mind LINK is all over the web promoting her photography. She does high-end weddings and has become very successful.

As above, I have some friends and family pictures on FB. If I want to show them to more than just my FB friends, I put them on their own page.

FB allows you to create a page not named after a person. I suspect that the suggested use is for promotion, but I have some with pictures from trips or other events.

is from my high school reunion last year, which included a tour of the school.

The black and white pictures are from 120 film in a Speedex.

are from my last days in my college dorm, on Tri-X that then sat in the camera for 30 years.

I had borrowed my father's Canon VI, bought a 50 foot roll of Tri-X, and this was the end of the roll.

 • 2 weeks later...

I use facebook for casual pictures, going out etc with a group, big days etc. Rather post direct to Facebook for these b/c if they are linked to elsewhere few people click on the link.

My own photography I use a link to my Flickr.

But yes even in my country one of the Nikon Ambassador use Facebook directly for his images and then linked to somewhere else where prints can be bought.

When you upload to FB, there is an option for a higher quality mode. Normal is barely screen resolution when downloaded. It doesn't keep the full resolution, but probably enough for a 5x7 inch print. All mine upload in the high quality mode.

Don't do Facebook - that's a blackhole that consume entirely too much time.

But I do have a collection of photographs on DeviantArt. My wife (who does do FB), has her photos on Flickr (but guess who has to maintain the display for her)

I tried Instagram, but it seemed to be a mobile device only thing and didn't play nice with my computer. I tried SnapChat but it drained my Galaxy 4 phone in 3 hours when I wasn't even using the app. It lasted about 24 hours on my device. I tried Tumblr but the site is clunky and a lot of work with no reward and too easy to screw up how your page looks. Twitter is OK. Facebook is pretty good once you tame it, that is getting all the stupid game app notifications from coming up on your feed limiting which friends post you see, this past year election was pretty bad on FB. I use it to keep in touch with a few old friends. I tried it for my photography, was nice for a wedding I shot, got a lot of contacts. But if you have a page, FB really want you to pay to play. But it can work for clients to see some of their photos and they send the link to their wedding guests. It has potential. Even when using it free. Nice thing about FB is you can get into it through the web and don't need the app. Also tried Pinterest, It may have potential but I really don't get it. I have heard Etsy can be a good way to sell large prints and posters, more for art type photography.

Lots of people seem to use Facebook but I'm not too keen on it. Things seem to appear that I never posted.

Same thing happens on my Facebook page where it's a ghost town, no comments on my photos or in my Timeline unless I post on another unrelated enthusiast site's comment section that shares what I say with Facebook. That's when my Timeline is visited by strangers who don't use their real name and give me a "Like" on a comment I posted in my Timeline but never my photos or posts some troll type meme of like say a video of a dog that rescues a newborn child hidden in a pile of garbage on the side of the street and gently carries it in his mouth and lays it out on the street for passerby's to take care of.

To heck with my photos!

Hell! I'm off hunting online on where to find this dog to see if the newborn was OK, only to find several similar videos of the same event but happening in different countries that tells me it's fake and thus allowing me to wallow in my stupidity for even researching it.

I forgot...uuh...what was the question? Oh, yeah...Is Facebook great for promoting one's photography or is it just a big giant waste of time? Take a guess!
