Camera Death

So this is embarrassing but I believe I have broken my Sony a55. I was taking pictures of the fire in the fireplace

and must have gotten too close (didn't think so?) but it completely shut down. Maybe the battery needed to be

charged...but nope it still wouldn't work.

Sooo...now I'm in the market for a new camera. It's been a long time since I've shopped. What are some

recommendations in the Sony line? I'd like to stick with Sony since I have several lenses that will fit.

Thanks!

Hmm, well, that's odd. I mean, unless you were so close to the fire that the camera actually got burned, it's not likely that was the cause. Simply coincidental.

Your best bet from Sony now is probably the a58 but the biggest issue there is that Sony won't sell it to you body alone. It only comes with the base 18-55mm lens. You'd have to sell that on eBay or someplace similar, and it might fetch $50 if you were lucky.

You can get the Sony a77 mk II body only, but it's much more expensive.

One thing to keep in mind is that all Sony SLT cameras suffer from a fatal design flaw. Because there's no way for a user to safely clean the translucent mirror, eventually you'll have junk on there that reduces image quality and will require a trip to camera repair for cleaning.

If you want to get around that, there are still some Sony DSLRs available, used, that predate this madness. The a580 is the best of that bunch and sells for around $400 USD used.

Thank you Patrick, it makes me feel better knowing it may not be my fault after all. And thanks for the suggestion on the a580. I found one for $325 on Amazon.

Sure! Keep in mind that the a580 is a traditional SLR, with a full mirror and no "live view" through the viewfinder like the a58 has, but it does have live view on the back LCD. If you want to know more about the a580 you might want to read the review here at DPReview.
