robert_scott9
There is now no film in it but i should have film in it tommorrow if i can load it... problem is: i cannot move the advance lever. i can only move it the fist 30 degrees and then it stops. i cannot relase the shutter to attempt to then move the lever. since i cant move the lever i can't load film and see if that changes anything.
I have opened it up and experimented with the rewind magic button but havn't had any luck. Also have been turning it on and on sound and havnt been haveing any luck.
The number of frames is set to "s" on the camera and there is no red showing on the safe load bar.
Trying to think of anythign else that might be helpfull... the self timer wont work because i can't trip the shutter... umm yea otehrwise everything seems to work fine. light meter works and everything lights up properly. Just the advance seems jammed and the shutter can't be tripped.
any help would be great!
andylynn
Is the battery okay? If the shutter's cocked but can't fire because it's electronic and has a dead battery, it would be acting like that.
Mike Gammill
If the battery is good then it may be a defective capacitor.
gil_w.
There are a few things to check here:
http://www.apug.org/forums/forum147/63541-minolta-x-700-shutter-advance-locked.html
I have also read about the curtain or mirror getting stuck but the capacitor always seems like the guilty part. However, I was given a X-700 that had the same problem and had it totally serviced and is fine today. It was not the capacitor and the repair form just stated "fixed stuck film advance".
I also aquired an SR-T 303 that was "stuck". I replaced the battery and played with the knobs, buttons and shutter lock up (not on 700 I know) and it became "cured". I feel it was the battery even though it was ok, perhaps just weak.
andylynn
If it's the capacitor or shutter curtain, repair shops have a lot of experience with these problems :)

Gil, the battery in an SRT only powers the meter. A stuck shutter on an SRT is exclusively a mechanical problem. But on an X-series the shutter is controlled by electronics, so a stuck shutter can be an electronic problem.
gil_w.
You are absolutely correct Andrew, my mistake about the SR-T, (a mechanical camera).
Gil
Mike Gammill
Some X-700 owners have replaced the capacitors themselves, but it is probably not the best course of action if you're not comfortable with opening a camera and replacing components.
d_f11
I can't tell fully from your description what's going on with your X700, but it's my main camera. Is the mirror also stuck in lock up position? If so, you can try this: Open the camera at both ends, meaning take off the lens in front and open in back. Take your two pinky fingers at both ends and carfully, gently move shutter curtain forward.
shafeeq_zaman
Oh my God! This worked for me. Thanks a lot, Robert! You're a life saver. I thought my camera was broken.
