zoom lense

As you might expect, the 75-300 f/4.5-5.6 is pretty soft and makes for a dark viewfinder. When used at 300mm, there's obvious color seperation and flare on 8x10 prints.

That said, I think it's a decent value and is certainly an inexpensive and light way to get those long focal lengths. I still use the one that I bought back in the 90s. Some examples of the softness at 300mm - notice in particular the lack of detail in the trees in the first sample:

Basically it performs as well as you can expect for a lens that is hardly expensive. In general use in good conditions it is pretty acceptable but the limitations show up when it is being "pushed".

I have to confess that I have gone over to a 70-210 f4 ( a big old beast but a quality zoom ) and use either another lens for the 300 end or if pushed I put a 1.5TC on it.

I got the 75-300 as a bonus when I bought my 7D, or it only cost me a quarter of what it usually would when I bought it in a kit.

Unless your a serious picture user, any amature will be happy with the results, as long as you can keep it steady.

That said I have used it rarely, mainly because I have no real use for anything that long at the moment.

I use my KM 28-70 2.8 lense, and what is turning into a favorite, 20-40 2.8 Sigma DG EX lense, very sharp and excellent colours indeed.

James - if you are interested in a telephoto zoom ( as opposed to a short zoom ) you may wish to consider another option which is the 100-300 f4.5-5.6 APO which many people are apparently pretty happy with.

If you would like to know what telephoto zooms Minolta have made I suggest you have a look at - www.mhohner.de - which is an excellent resource on all things Minolta.

Trust you find this relevant to your enquiry.

Nothing much happening tonight Bill?

I should start by saying this post is relevant to your post and nothing to do with James's, we must make that clear first up, do not want to get things confused now do we.....?

I do enjoy reading your comical sarcasm in your posts, it does lighten up the forum and provide me with many a smiles :)

I quote a few lines of your homour (in relation it seems to my post)

(as opposed to a short zoom)

Well one would be foolish to think someone cannot share a photographic interest in this forum. Adding my 2 cents after I commented on the actual 75-300 lense James was talking about to my experience with my shorter zooms, well how foolish of me to talk out of the details of the specific post James was asking about.

"Trust you find this relevant to your enquiry"

Well why not just come out and say to myself or any person posting in this forum.

"Please stick to the topic or question, and do not post any information that is not relevant to the orginal post"

Bill, much easier to say something like that, than dish out that endless comical sarcasm in your posts that make me roll around the floor laughing so much that I potentially hurt myself.

But then again we all need a person such as yourself to put everyone in order and to have someone endlessly portray to everyone else that they are so tired with what appears to be endless dribble coming out of every member here.

I do hope you find this relevant to you post Bill, Otherwise hit me with you comical sarcasm. I and I am sure, We all do enjoy it.
